The College Dropout, West’s debut album, which would supposedly go on to change the direction of mainstream Hip-Hop is a classic. Coincidentally, it was Chance’s first album (ironically, for our generation, it was either that or Get Rich or Die Tryin'), and apparently it inspired Chance to rap. Chance isn’t the first person to have listed Ye as an influence however, as Drake and, more recently, Casey Veggies, have also said this.

The reaction Earl gives here is sort of funny at this point, as, although he used to be criticised for saying the F word all the time, Tyler is now seen as almost an activist for Gay people in Hip-Hop, especially after Frank Ocean’s coming out last year.

Tyler, The Creator and Earl Sweatshirt are part of the three-headed dragon that is Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, a collective of Musicians, Artists, Skateboarders and whatever else the group of misfits can be labelled as. Earl and Tyler are arguably their two biggest members, along with Frank Ocean, who was also interviewed in this issue.

Although his alter-egos might smoke, Tyler doesn’t smoke, drink or do drugs, as he has stated in interviews. This is ironic considering the constant drug references throughout his album WOLF, which even has a song dedicated to the negative effects of crack.

The use of filler language here (found in the word ‘hmmm’), as well as the ellipsis show that Frank has to think deeply about what he’s going to say next, before he comes out with a speech. It is, however, important to note that this is an interview over the phone and that the two characters speaking are in two very different time zones.
