In today’s society, we’re taught that making money is the most important thing in life, as we need it to buy food, water and materials. As teenagers and young adults, we follow other people and what society generally promotes as “cool”, instead of thinking about what future implications this has, or thinking of saving money for a rainy day, we spend it on things we don’t need.

For example, we are taught that acting and looking like these people is cool, because it’s on MTV and the antics of their daily lives are seen as enjoyable and mindless fun.

Dot criticizes this, by saying that following the path of material wealth and false appearances is the path of Temptation, as it corrupts us.

A good play on words.

Essentially, I/O grew up in this town, which may have seemed so big and glorious when he was younger, but now that he’s older, it seems boring and small.

He’s saying that he’s too big for this small town, and what’s to explore the world.

I/O knows that if this is his big chance, then he needs to take it in his step and not look back.

By saying

Fuck it

he implies that he may have been regretting this decision, but then changes his opinion and decides that taking this chance is his opportunity to put him and his friends on.

The repetition really makes this sink in as well.

Having the “weight of the world on your tongue” would be an overwhelming feeling, one that could make one bite his tongue and not truly express themselves. So, it’s natural for I/O to feel overwhelmed in this situation.

Feel a change

Could mean that he feels different with her, as she does provide him some downtime to let go of his stress/anxiety. It can also mean that this pressure is getting to him and he’s changing, as a person; this would be outwardly obvious, hence the question

Can’t you tell?

There isn’t an end to perfection, it’s just a constant race to reach a false ideal that ultimately wastes a lot of money and a lot of time, not to mention the missed opportunities.

Here, Elijah asks why you would seek perfection when, in reality, you can’t even reach it?

He ends this on a note that will appeal to a lot of insecure teenage girls, telling the audience and, possibly, a girl he may be speaking to, to just perfect being themselves, as it is much more worthwhile and rewarding.

Here, Dot, now 24 and on his path, tells us to imagine this as the start of his journey, which implies that he has a long way to go yet.

Love is often referred to as a game. And even when you feel like you’ve won, you can still lose. The use of ‘game’ also makes their love seem immature.
