Adults and people of older generations (specifically Religious adults) often question the antics of teens on Facebook and Twitter (where you have 14 year-old girls taking pictures of themselves in underwear and what not), and the influence it has on their own children and yet, they don’t do anything practical about it.

They’ll brand Social-Networking as the Devil, but, because they don’t supervise their children, they aren’t really in the position to place the blame on their children or Social-Networking websites. This ties in with the allusion to the proverb of “the pot calling the kettle black” in the previous line, as both are at fault and yet only one really gets blamed.

This topic is also spoken of on Life is Good in the second verse of the song Daughters, where the verse ends with Nas admitting that he wasn’t the best parent

At this point I realized I ain’t the strictest parent,
I’m too loose, I’m too cool with her,
Should’ve drove on time to school with her,
I thought I dropped enough jewels on her

To put this into context, Lauryn is criticizing the Media and the parents for being hypocritical and blaming kids and Social Networking websites instead of admitting their parenting and supervision of their children isn’t the greatest.

I/O makes a play on the phrase “Peace of mind” with the songs title, meaning the line

And you provide me with some peace of mind

Can be interpreted in two ways:

  1. She provides him with a feeling of peace and joy that overcome any stress or anxiety he has.

  2. She provides him with a piece of mind, meaning that she provides him with some intellect and common sense, instead of what I’d assume any other person his age would discuss and be interested in. As a lot of people don’t know what they want to do for the rest of their life in their early twenties, but with him being a singer, I guess it’s hard for people to understand his ambitions.

In a world without the religious ideas of Heaven or Hell, we’d have no idea what would happen in the afterlife and, therefore, would feel free to take chances because there would be less boundaries.

A lot of people miss out on life-changing experiences because they are too afraid to take risks or their beliefs limit them from do so.

I/O just adds to the endless catalogue of ‘What ifs’ by asking, what would the world be like if we took those chances, and weren’t worried about death when we were living?

In the opening line to this song, I/O ties two proverbs together into one, with the idea of having “the weight of the world on your shoulders” and “biting your tongue”.

He’s basically saying that he’s had experiences where he’s kept his words to himself, because they might cause a major rift or problem in his day to day life.

It could also mean with his emerging image as an artist, if he says something that offends people he knew before he was famous, he knows he’ll receive a lot of backlash for it, so he bites his tongue.

This can be linked to the song I’d Be Lying, where I/O discusses the price of fame and fortune.

In this line, Isaiah creates the image of a King, with the word ‘despotic’ specifically meaning “any person in power who acts tyrannically”.

And then proclaims the listener to be nothing more than a mere ‘hooligan’, a person that a Tyranny can control with both unfair laws and sheer power.

“What’s a mob to a King?” comes to mind.

He informs the listener that it isn’t them (possibly other rappers listening) that he’s talking about so that they don’t start shit. But then puts the listener/other rappers below him, saying they could only wish to be his enemy.

K-os then tells us that his enemy is time. But then says that time has been good to him so far.

This line also ties into the previous one,

I stay close to my enemy

As time is technically always with you.

He’s tired of living the same old life in the same old place. The lack of new experiences make it hard for him to be inspired because he’s seen most of what this place has to offer before.

And if he can’t take inspiration from his environment or any new experiences, then he won’t have much to base his songs off of.

He’d be lying if he said he wanted to just up and forget about everything and everyone who made him who he is today, but he has to take his opportunity and his place in the spotlight.

He just wants the people he knows and loves to understand that he isn’t ‘selling out’, or changing, he’s just doing what he thinks is right.

He feels as if he has to escape his local town and travel the world.

Despite being close to the local people, he knows he can’t waste his time there for too long, and that his destiny is to be famous for his music.

The ‘Closing In’ part suggests that he’s too familiar with his surroundings in the place he lives, and feels as if the town itself is becoming smaller because it’s becoming too small for him to make any discoveries or adventures out of.

Alternatively, you could look at the small town as the fans he already has, and the bright lights (as they are known to), represent the Good life.

Pretty much every musician goes through this stage at one point, and its hard to keep everyone happy. For example

He feels heartbroken after this and seeks comfort (“loving”), but knows it isn’t there.
