Thugger’s growing cannabis, also known as “trees.” By specifying that he’s smoking weed, and not the less conspicuous “trees,” he’s unapologetic for his drug use.

Rapping about weed is one of Thuggers favorite subjects.

In context, “Maria” refers to marijuana. “Maria” is the Spanish name for “Mary”—weed is commonly referred to as “Mary Jane.” Travis has used Spanish in his songs before, like in “Mamacita.”

A “marina” is a dock or port to the ocean, derived from the Italian language. In a similar way to Kendrick Lamar on “Swimming Pools (Drank),” Scott uses water as a metaphor for the immersion in substances he experiences. Scott is high, as well as drunk.

Justin’s inviting this girl into his extravagant lifestyle. She’s not used to sipping expensive drinks and chilling with superstars in the studio. While you could say he’s been “fucking around” for some time now, after his emotional VMAs performance and interview with Jimmy Fallon, he seems ready to get back on track and find a stable girlfriend.

While Travis is happy to do something illegal to make his money back in no-time, he’s “off the deep end” with The Weeknd and XO Crew. Lamar is The Weeknd’s best friend and art director/photographer and Cash is his manager. They seem to all be at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Note the homophone on “the weekend” and the artist The Weeknd, who’s featured on this track. Originally called “The Weekend” – Abel dropped the “e” since another Canadian band is already named that.“ Interestingly, The Weeknd referenced something similar earlier in Rick Ross' song, “In Vein”.

Don Julio is a popular brand of tequila, but Bieber seems to be a fan of tequila, no matter the brand. In 2014, he partied at the launch for Diddy’s Deleon Tequila.

While the girl he’s addressing certainly isn’t his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez, in his new video for “What Do You Mean,” he’s seen getting intimate with model Xenia Deli, who he’s rumoured to be dating.

“Vice City” is the eighth track on Jay Rock’s sophomore album, 90059. It features TDE and Black Hippy members – Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, ScHoolboy Q and Rock himself. Cardo and Yung Exclusive (aka Yex) produced the song.

The title of the song refers to Los Angeles (Vice City). A vice is a behavior that is considered immoral or sinful. Each artist touches on their personal vices, but the overarching theme is the social commentary of black culture. As depicted in the video, the vices appear to be money and women—stereotypical vices that are often glamorized in the media.

This is the music video version which has a longer verse from ScHoolboy Q, but ends after that instead of after Kendrick Lamar.

4th Avenue is one of the largest and most popular streets in downtown Seattle and the city’s major parade route. While Macklemore is walking through the street, everyone has their eyes on him. To add to the patriotic and hyperbolic nature of the song, he describes doing a handstand and having an eagle join him. An eagle landing on someones seat while they are doing a headstand on a moped kind of sounds like something out of a ‘MERICA gif that the internet would make up.

Wasabi is a spicy Japanese condiment similar to horseradish. It’s a common accompaniment to sashimi (raw fish) and sushi (rolls of rice) – Macklemore’s stunts are so raw that they too should be accompanied by wasabi.

Since Mack is riding so low and dirty on his slick new moped, he decides to use a bit of hyperbole to emphasize how he is feeling. He feels especially cool, and he may also be saying this to inform us of his masculinity. He once made a song called “Penis Song” that talks about how insecure he is about his junk.

This track was slated to feature Sir Paul McCartney and land on Kanye West’s 7th solo album, The Life of Pablo. Travis Scott had other ideas: he traded an early demo of “FML” in exchange for this song.

The song’s aggressive, in-your-face vibe is reminiscent of West’s Yeezus album in both production and structure.

In context, “Piss on your grave” is a prophetic announcement to the white “executives” of corporate America. The baby boomers have retired, and now only Generation X stands between the Snake Person’s and corporate governance. Kanye and Travis know these faceless men are a dying breed and can’t wait to rain on their parade. Kanye touched on this during his VMA Vanguard Award Acceptance Speech:

We the snake people bro, this is a new, this is a new mentality. We not gonna control our kids with brands. We’re not gonna teach low self-esteem and hate to our kids, we’re gonna teach our kids that they can be something. We gonna teach our kids that they can stand up for themselves. We gonna teach our kids to believe in themselves.

The song’s instrumental samples Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun.”
