Protools is a leading company in music production. Dre implies his production process in the studio is like a drive-by-shooting. Studios have “clips,” as do guns.

Scottie Pippen, Michael Jordan’s right-hand man was exceptional on both sides of the court. He wore number 33 and this alludes to Glock clips that hold 33 rounds in both hands.

Along with many other great artists, Dre has a love/hate relationship with hip-hop, but his devotion to the culture is profound. So profound, he’s devoting all the profits from this record to create a music institution for young inner city kids in Compton.

During the above interview in 1997, Dre stated that while “everyone’s just out here trying to do their thing” some rappers “should keep it to a 9-5.” Meaning they’re not fully invested in the music business, unlike Dre who went onto say that he “listens to everyone’s music, including classical and heavy metal,” and actually “listens to "wack” shit more – so I know what not to do.“ Fast forward to 2015, and things haven’t changed much. A sea of purple Actavis and “Vine” rappers out for 6 seconds of fame come standard.

Who’s waiting on the good news? Hip-hop. In an update on his 1999 collaboration with Eminem on “Forgot About Dre,” a 50 year old Andre Young postures himself as an gate-keeper in hip-hop whom MC’s visit in hopes of being handed buzz or hype.

Dre seems to feel like rappers are still relying on certain individuals to create hype, rather than putting in the work themselves. Similarly, Lil Wayne covered similar this subject on “Dr. Carter.”

Just like Kendrick Lamar, it seems Anderson was invited to Dr. Dre’s house. In “Talking To My Diary,” Dre raps “And my house got a view of the city like a highrise.”

Featuring on an album such as Compton is a big coup for Paak, a singer-songwriter, rapper and drummer from Oxnard, Calif who grew up idolizing Dre. He feels as though he’s a “diamond in the rough” – “flawless” diamonds are the most expensive and are usually kept safe in places like vaults.

Once again, Dre draws parallels between the city of Compton and the music industry. While the crime rate is one of the highest in the United States, Comtpon has birthed some of the greatest rappers of all time, including: Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and Kendrick Lamar.

Hub City is another name for Compton, CA. and it is known to have its wild side.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average teachers wage in America was $56,383 in 2013.

Issues like underpaid teaching staff, the low socio-economic status of black Americans, and militarized police all contribute to the oppression of the Black community.

The theme of the film is also a narrative on the beginnings of N.W.A, and Dre’s contemporaries and teachers at the time: MC Ren, The D.O.C., DJ Yella and many more from that era. These, Dre claims, are the teachers of the modern generation, but they no longer receive the respect or the paychecks they deserve for their impact on the culture.

During the 1980’s, the homicide rate per 100,000 in Compton was considerably higher than it was in 2015. To put this into consideration, when this album was released in 2015, Detroit was seen as one of the most dangerous cities. In 2012, the homicide rate per 100,000 people was 54.6 – considerably lower than a 1980’s Compton.

As the story goes, Dr. Dre was working on the beat for “Fuck Tha Police” and was actually harassed by officers halfway through, presumably with a “billy club” (police baton).

After the incident, Cube handed him the lyrics and the rest is history.

Before Dre was laying down beats for N.W.A, he was part of the World Class Wreckin Cru along with DJ Yella. The Cru was an electro group active in the early-late 1980’s that was signed to CBS. They played at lots of local venues, like the Skateland rink in Compton.
