The Weeknd begins his 2015 album, Beauty Behind the Madness, with advice from his own mother on how his life was going to destroy him over time.
In this intro, we find Abel opening up about mistakes and claiming them as such, rather than in the storytelling aspect he has utilized during his career.
The song’s pre-chorus is reminiscent of the bridge on Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean”,
Abel also mentions his relationship with his mother on the grandiose Echoes of Silence track “The Fall.”
I believe he is continuing his storytelling as you could replace the girl in this song with his career choices. I’m not sure if these things really happened between him and a girl, however he is definitely talking to and with his fanbase of the past and future. Consequential business decisions, as well as interpersonal decisions, qualify as the “real life” his “mama said”

This song also seems to interpolate Mary J. Blige’s “Real Love” in the chorus.
I love this song. :)

I think he’s talking about how he finds it difficult to fall in love, that’s my opinion though
