When it comes to revolution, Cole’s first thought was to overthrow the people at the top and destroy the system, but he notices that it may not be the best option. It’s likely that, if it were possible, the victims would turn into the oppressor and seek revenge similar to abusers and their victims.

In an interview with Complex News at the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Cole said:

Violence don’t bring peace, ain’t no way. Violence cannot bring peace, period. It’s impossible. By the laws of the universe, it’s impossible. That’s what happening in Gaza, in Israel…there’s no peace with violence.

Similar to Cole’s hook in “Change,” Cole believes that real change comes from within, i.e. before you go and try to change the world, you have to be at peace with yourself, otherwise you’ll end up just like the thing you tried to destroy.

What Cole touches on has happened throughout history—the best example is the French Revolution. The French people overthrew and destroyed the monarchy in such a violent way that they became just like the monarchs themselves, and in the end put Napoleon in charge. Napoleon became so overwhelmed by power that he turned out to be something even worse than the thing he was supposed to replace (an emperor).
