Au départ formé de deux MC/beatmakers, Cambia et 20syl, le tandem produit une première cassette très artisanale intitulée Première Formule, avant de rencontrer DJ Greem.

Une fois devenu un trio, Hocus Pocus sort en totale autoproduction (et donc en tirage assez intime et quasiment introuvable aujourd'hui) son premier véritable album, Seconde Formule en 1998.

Cette seconde formule 2 MC’s et 1 DJ finit par s'essouffler et le nom Hocus Pocus est mis au frigo quelque temps, avant que 20syl le réveille en 2001 avec sa chanson (et son label du même nom) “Onandon”, puis l'EP Acoustic Hip Hop Quintet, inaugurant une “troisième formule” incorporant des musiciens organiques, celle que tout le monde connaît aujourd'hui, après la sortie des trois albums 73 Touches, Place 54 et 16 Pièces.

Actuellement, 20syl et Greem se concentrent sur le collectif de DJ, C2C, dont ils sont deux des quarts.

C'est une référence au roman qui a donné un film célèbre avec Belmondo et Gabin du même titre Un singe en hiver. Le thème principal du bouquin, c'est l'amitié entre les deux protagonistes, même si l'alcool est un des sujets centraux.

Les “singes en hiver” qui sont évoqués dans le livre font référence à des singes qui se réfugient dans les villes de Chine en hiver. La métaphore d'Orelsan est donc la suivante : il est un incrusté dans la société, qui s'y réfugie par crainte de la solitude, mais n'est pas du tout à sa place parmi nous.

Enfin, on peut noter que le livre se passe à “Tigreville”, c'est-à-dire Villerville, une commune située à une quarantaine de kilomètres de Caen, d'où vient Orelsan.

Durant le premier semestre 2000, la sortie du maxi “Civilisé” annonce la venue du premier album de Lunatic, groupe formé par les rappeurs Ali et Booba. Porté aux nues en quelques titres et quelques frasques – featuring sur le maxi des Sages Po', mixtape Cut Killer consacré au groupe, ‘Le crime paie’ sur “Hostile hip hop”, ‘Les vrais savent’ sur “L.432”, incarcération de Booba pour braquage de taxi –, le binôme doit alors faire face à sa légende.

Scénario idéal pour un échec cuisant ?
Cela ne sera pas le cas, en tout cas pas immédiatement, car cet album deviendra un classique du rap français.

Malheureusement, il restera également le seul album du duo avant sa séparation, rétrospectivement inévitable.

Le skaï est le nom donné à un tissu plastique imitant le cuir. Quand on a un canapé en skaï, c'est n'est pas franchement la définition du succès financier. Plutôt que s'élever vers les cieux, Gringe va plutôt finir par se vautrer dans son canap de beauf. Encore une autodérision, évidemment.

Le bokken est un sabre en bois japonnais (en général de la forme et de la longueur d'un katana) utilisé pour l'entraînement au kendô (l'art du sabre japonais).

Contrairement à ce que certains pourraient croire, Claude M'Barali a poursuivi des études supérieures, donc “élémentaire” ici n'a rien à voir avec l'école primaire. MC Solaar exprime ici son humilité contrastant avec les exploits qu'on lui attribue : il a beau avoir été un artiste à succès, Solaar avoue que dans la vie, il a failli à remplir certains objectifs simples qu'il ne précise pas (peut-être de l'ordre familial).

Et si, l'élémentaire était, dans cette chanson ou les paroles sont gorgées de religion, le baptème? Il n'a pas fait l'élémentaire, la base, le socle de la croyance, avec ni baptème, ni cathéchisme, ni communion.
Je trouve que cela donne un sens encore plus pronnoncé à ce couplé fabuleux! De son point de vu et depuis le début de la chanson ou il est “mort”, il est croyant. Mais était-il croyant lui même de son vivant? Dans son texte “Ce me hante”, on retrouve cette allusion à l'homme mort qui se met subitement à croire en une puissance supérieure de peur de tomber dans le vide abyssal et pour se raccrocher à une branche, que ce ne soit pas la fin (“Dès lors je prie Dieu, ponctue par Amen
Jure de faire le Ramadan, Pessah et puis Carême
Mes yeux se ferment et pour ne pas voir le diable
Mentalement je lis l'Ave Maria en arabe”).
