Although he was born in New York, “To Live and Die in L.A.” is Tupac’s ode to the metropolis he loved the most: Los Angeles. In this “California Love Part 2,” he talks about all the particularities that make the City of Angels such a great place to live—and die, ranging from its immigrants to its infamous gangs.

2Pac once again reconnects with producer QDIII, who revealed that the song was done in less than two hours, with 2Pac writing his lyrics in about 15 minutes and laying his vocals in one take before singer Val Young and guitarist Ricky Rouse came in to do their parts.

The quote “Live fast. Die young. Leave a good-looking corpse” is often misattributed to James Dean, probably because he died in a car accident when he was 24 (and in the prime of his acting career)

Jay-Z references Dean as an example of someone who, like Jay, cannot escape the “allure” of “living fast”, even though it leads to his ruin

Also the line “Die young, leave a good-lookin corpse” is in the opening monologue of the movie True Romance (Jay-Z has mentioned on twitter that this is his favorite movie).

Jay-Z ruminates on the old high of dealing drugs:
O lost, and by the wind grieved, Ghost, Come back again!

Jay-Z is from Bedford-Stuyvesant, the ghettoest neighborhood in Brookly(o)n

He says “Brook-Nam” because Brooklyn is (or use to be) so violent that it earned this nickname comparing the borough to Vietnam.

He should have just shut the fuck up and minded his business. We went after him after that. Like, I fucking hit you in the head. I took it upon myself like, ‘You know what? This fucking bitch ass nigga popping shit about some shit that he wasn’t even around and his name was involved.’ Tupac was going at him. His name was all in that and he didn’t have nothing to say at that time.

Even though Snoop Dogg is from Long Beach, he and Jay-Z are good friends. Snoop Dogg had beef with Mobb Deep and so, in a video for a diss song recorded with The Dogg Pound (Snoop’s little homies) called “New York, New York”, Snoop Dogg poses as a Godzilla-like creature stomping around and destroying buildings in New York.

Here, Jay-Z is taking Snoop’s rebuke as an opportunity for self-criticism, and criticism of his hometown’s hardness.

“Ethics”, by Jay-Z:

Step 1: Sin
Step 2: Repent
Step 3: Rescind repentance
Step 4: Raise the price on your drugs so you can buy diamond watches

Sinning and counting on being forgiven is reminiscent of Saint Augustine’s attitude in The Confessions of St. Augustine (Chap. 2)
