These words are taken from The Torah – Deuteronomy 6:4-9 to be precise. It speaks to how religion’s strict insistence that its followers pass on its teaching to others has helped it become one of the most prominent aspects of mankind since Ancient times.

To live life, you kids might just close your computer
The street lights might blind you, though
Make a collage and look at it through a kaleidoscope
.

This idea above best represents what Mac has brought to Hip-Hop in 2013 and how he has advanced his sound. Whilst Mac made sure that he presented many unique views that he has on life to the listeners where he shined brightest was when he took basic ideas and principles and translated them in different ways to make us think about things many of us will see as unimportant; whether he does it in a humorous way

Yeah, young sire, slap the fuck out Jon Cryer
Rough rider, raw bust inside a vagina
Like I want kids
.

Observational;

America, the standard of vanity when the camera’s up
We become celebrities, distract from the hysteria
.

Fictional;

Forfeit in the war, he lays a sword down and walks away
Grabs a 40 from the corner store and begins to contemplate
.

Or Introspective;

I think I’m JFK’s final speech
They try assassinating all of my beliefs
.

#Point is Mac can rap from many different view-points and evoke many different emotions!

I think both …Like Clockwork (as in the title track) and The Vampyre of Time and Memory are incredibly beautiful and passionate songs led by Josh Homme with single voice performances from Josh showcasing just how diverse and experimental QOTSA are willing to be for what many consider a mainstream rock band.

Nihilism and depression are spread across throughout this track, and the guitar riffs have a very eerie feel to them which I enjoyed. The composition of this song is just brilliant, especially with the drum solo’s from Homme.

#The illusion that you feel is real

This track is the perfect representation for what …Like Clockwork brings to Rock; Depressing, hard-hitting, lyrical and pessimistic. The musical shift at around 4:15 of the full version sends chills down my spine, the instrumentation on this song is perfect. The lyrics are sometimes surreal, and always full of emotion. Josh Homme and QOTSA put out the second best album of 2013, and my SOTY.

Thomas' girl gave him gonorrhea when they were probably on vacation in El Salvador, a small island in central America.

This may also be subtle reference to the Surrealist painter and entertainer Salvador Dali, because of the link with the name of the Country as well as the very surreal depiction of strangling his girl without a cord. Mac is known to be a big fan of the geniuses work.

Continuing on with the previous theme and a common theme in Mac’s work, here we see part of his outlook on life. Mac has often said that he doesn’t believe in one universal truth, and that exploring the various truths in the world only leads to you become a more intelligent and enlightened person. The Bible can be a challenging read for anyone, and for Mac who is a self-proclaimed sinner, it is even harder to read knowing that he is destined to serve his afterlife in hell.

Also by ingratiating multiples ideas into one you get more of a broaden look at life, like Mac showcased in his music video for Watching Movies;

I just love fucking with people on religion ‘cause they get so serious over it, especially in YouTube comments. I just think having bitches twerking in a church was just fucking ridiculous

Source.

Essentially to better someone know more about them and their stance on things as well as truly understand your view on things.

Two of the figureheads of the modern world and enemies are brought to our attention here. Mac is almost contradictory by stating that everything in this world is science, but then alludes to a meeting with God (something both religion and science would be uncomfortable with).

By being full of hate, Mac is potentially demonstrating how the many different beliefs in this world always clash and turn violent/nasty. Why can’t we believe both/either/neither and just go on with our lives? He’s also justifying his hate by saying that his body just is like that – full of hate cells.

Also we must note that Mac has finally reaches Zion;

Search the world for Zion…

Continuing on the previous line Thomas is showcasing his talent for lying by blaming this almost hilarious act on a little boy. Who knows, maybe it is the same kid Mac referenced in Bird Call;

Have your little brother asking moms what a pussy is. Corruption…

Now that he is out of the way, and with his girls dad focused on films he is able to have some alone time with the girl.

This also serves as a reference to Miller’s second studio album Watching Movies With The Sound Off.

A common theme in Mac’s work is that he doesn’t take people for face value like most people on this earth do. Whereas many rappers conform and try to act ‘normal’ to appeal to people, Mac isn’t afraid to be himself despite the fact that he isn’t normal.

Mac alluded to something similar on his single S.D.S from his sophmore album Watching Movies With The Sound Off;

I’d rather write my own history book, where the world don’t give a fuck ‘bout how you physically look.

“Weird” Al Yankovic is an American parody artist who – alongside his eccentric looks – has an extreme and often over the top way of mocking other artists.
