“Seeds” could be a metaphor for ADD medication pills, considering Serj himself said the song was about ADD. Serj criticizes the society, and the way kids get drugged down with these pills today.

A rumor spread because of this line, saying people eat sunflower seeds as a pastime activity in Armenia. Some Armenians probably do, but it’s most likely not a common “pastime activity…”

Additionally, it could also be a baseball reference. Many baseball players chew sunflower seeds in lieu of chewing tobacco on the field, and baseball is referred to as “America’s pastime.”
