Lonzo Ball, son of LaVar Ball, made his NBA debut in the 2017 season. Despite showing potential and being selected #2 overall in the draft, his performance has left much to desire.

Similarly, the solar eclipse that occurred on August 21 was disappointing for anyone who didn’t view it from the path of totality because the sky didn’t get nearly as dark as expected.

This line continues to speak about Kevin Spacey. In the movie The Usual Suspects, Spacey plays Verbal Kint, a suspect being interrogated in regards to a massacre. After pinning the massacre on a mysterious mob boss, Keyser Soze, the detectives let Kint go. Upon receiving a sketch of the mob boss from another witness, the detectives realized Kint is actually Keyser Soze. It’s too late by then; Soze has already walked out of the police department and escaped. Here, Skillz is telling Kevin Spacey he can’t escape the situation in the same fashion.

In October 2017, actor Anthony Rapp alleged that Kevin Spacey, another famous actor, sexually assaulted him 30 years prior. Rapp was 14 and Spacey was 28 at the time. In an apology letter Spacey posted on Twitter, he admitted that he didn’t remember the encounter which isn’t an outright denial. In the letter, Spacey also came out as gay which many people saw as a way for him to deflect the allegation.

Despite winning an NBA championship and playing alongside arguably the greatest player of all time, LeBron James, Kyrie Irving chose to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Boston Celtics. Kyrie wants to lead a team to a championship, something impossible to do while playing in LeBron’s shadow.

After much anticipation, Conor McGregor fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Conor’s first regulation boxing match on August 26th, 2017. Both had been entertaining the idea of fighting each other since early 2016. The guaranteed minimum payouts for Mayweather and McGregor were $100 million and $30 million, respectively. Taking into account Pay-Per-View earnings, the fighters' payouts were reported to be $250 million and $100 million. To put things into perspective, Conor’s UFC career earnings totaled to about $10 million.

The Migos were interviewed by the hosts of Everyday Struggle at the BET Awards back in June 2017. This line was Takeoff’s direct response to DJ Akademiks' question about why Takeoff was not featured on the popular song “Bad and Boujee.”

Girls Trip was Tiffany Haddish’s breakthrough hit. Prior to its release, she had only acted in a few supporting roles prior to co-starring in the film.

Despite the success of the movie, neither it or Tiffany were nominated for a Golden Globe. Some people (including Tiffany’s co-star in the film, Jada Pinkett Smith) saw this as a snub.

Season 2 of Insecure, the HBO show created by Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, was met with universal acclaim. Molly and Issa are two of the series' main characters. The show has helped create more diversity on TV. In an interview with Vox, Issa stated:

The second [important thing about making Insecure] was just the core of it: Making sure that the title character was this flawed, regular, human black person. I didn’t want to have high stakes; I didn’t want it to be high concept. I just wanted it to be a regular story about black people.

Back in April, Kendall Jenner starred in a Pepsi commercial that featured her joining a protest and giving a Pepsi to a police officer to ease tensions between both sides. The advert received major backlash in the media; it was in bad taste considering the fact that many anti-police brutality protests had occurred in 2016 and 2017. Many of them ended in injuries and arrests.

North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jung-un is akin to a child with a hand grenade. Throughout 2017, he threatened Japan and the US with the use of nuclear weapons, including numerous tests in which missiles were launched into the sea near Japan.
