Riq Geez is Black Thoughts nickname. With Riq deriving from Tariq, his first name. BT is so good he should be the mayor.

In professional sports, a franchise player is an athlete who is not simply the best player on their team, but a player that the team can build their “franchise” (team) around for the foreseeable future. Thats what The Roots did and has been active now for over 20 years releasing their first solo album Organix in 1993 with Tariq and Questlove as the face of the “franchise”.

Heat = Gun. Black Thought rolls with guns (heat) just as Wade, Lebron James and Chris Bosh roll together as part of the Miami Heat, Miami’s professional basketball team. Dangerous mofo, don´t test him!

The Roots, the group which Black Thought is a member of, have a song with Talib Kweli called “Rolling With Heat.”

#The Boss Is Back!

A reference to “I Won” by Future:

Ever since I got with you I feel like I done won me a trophy
A trophy, I won me a trophy
I won, I won, I won
A trophy

Just like Future has won a trophy getting that trophy wife – so has Black Thought, but for being the best.

Just like in drug dealing people kill each other for money, prestige and territory. This was released in 2000 and even sampled Biggie on the hook who had a background has a hustler and got shot in the rap game. At the time it wasn´t seldom either since it happened to Tupac as well.

Reminicant of how Nas wanted Jungle to talk shit over a beat on the intro for Illmatic, “The Genesis”. Just like on “The Genesis” Jungle is brought in after sampling Nas verses.

Nas third studio album was I Am… as the saying goes – third times the charm! Numerous artist have spoken out about their inspiration and admiration for this album such as J. Cole, Schoolboy Q and 2 Chainz, so Jungle might have a point with it being the worst time telling them.

As it was originally titled, I Am… Autobiography, was heavily leaked (here is rumored tracklist). This in turn caused Nas to scrap some songs (The Lost Tapes, “Project Window”, “Come Get Me” and “Amongst Kings”) , recorded a few new ones, shortned the title to just I Am… and release it before it was finished.

Therefore Nas brother Jungle exclaims that people have already heard it before it was offically released.

How the guns plagues the ghetto:

  • Bloaw — the onomatopoeia of the gun
Move crowds refers to gunfire causing the natural reaction of panic, especially at concerts and clubs and other large gatherings

  • Foul Ghetto — refers to the unsafe and hazardous environment of crime infested neighborhoods as well the foul odors of dead bodies

  • First Child — normally associated with a mother losing her son via being recruited into the crime life. As well as representing losing your child to gun violence.

  • Scarred your life — bullets often leave physical scars as well as mental trauma, scarring one’s sanity, or possible losing someone close to yo.

  • Crippled your style — literally putting one in a wheelchair
The last line refers to the false sense of security the gun enables which often leads to one becoming more ambitious and possibly reckless even though that person could be one of the aforementioned victims in the near future.
