A wise guy is a highly ranked individual in a crime family, but this is the black mafia! In Hip- Hop it´s something positive, in a sense you re “on top of the world” as much as the mafia icons he mentions. Nas would later change his rapping style and subjects into mafioso themes especially on his album It Was Written.

  • Charlie “Lucky” Luciano was an Italian-American mob boss who is widely considered the father of American organized crime. Who starteed the whole commoission instead of having one mafia leader it was a board and they voted.

  • Frankie Yale, was a Brooklyn gangster who at one time worked above Al Capone.

  • Bugsy Siegel, a jewish mobster who was apart of the Luciano mob familyhe became one of the first front-page-celebrity gangsters. He was also a driving force behind the development of the Las Vegas Strip.

As he has described throughout the song he kills and gambles alot, to the point that he even got the title New York City Slayer and makes more gutsy gambles like parlays. Parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay is that there are much higher payoffs than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher. If any of the bets in the parlay lose, the entire parlay loses. So he´s a pro at gambling.

A simlie to the old folk legend Wil Bill Hickok: The Prince Of Pistolers, who was famous for his skills as a gunfighter and as a gambler. Which Nas describes about himself throughout all verses in this song. If he is as good as The Prince OF Pistoleers you should definitely fear him!

These adlib where influenced by B.I.G during P. Diddy´s first verse of “Victory”; telling the engineer to boost his levels. Which would be duplicated and copied in many rap songs to come. Jay Z even made this technique one of his signature sounds in his music around the Blueprint era. It gives a very loose and raw feeling to the recording and makes the listener feel like they were a part of the recording session.

Jay takes it to the next level on this one when he tells Guru, his engineer rhythmically; high, high, high, high-er. Jay Z talks about the adlibs of “Victory” in this interview. How great and the influence it had:

Since this was done in 93, the next year was 94 – the year Illmatic dropped. He definitely rewrote the script for how you make a hip hop album. For instance having multiple producers on a hip hop album and from the perspective he rapped from.
