This is a reference to a line in the song “Victory” by P. Diddy and Biggie Smalls, where Biggie says Diddy runs New York.

P. Diddy run the city, show no pity
I’m the witty one, Frank’s the crook from the Brook'

Bonus side note: Diddy has also run the New York Marathon.

J Cole has “coasted” so far where he is now in rap, which is why he’s relocated to Hollywood. That’s where the rich & famous stay!

Cole isn’t putting in filler; he’s venting about his old issues, and letting all out with a sigh of relief.

Also, Cole literally is spitting all three lines on one breathe of air. He breathes and then let’s loose all three bars while he vents. Double entendres are great!

Cole didn’t realize the implications of his actions at the time he was in college, but now he realizes that when he had sex with a girl and then ignored her, that was painful for her.

Now he faces her on the street, and he gets to feel the guilt of how she thinks he isn’t worth anything because he’s a sinner inside.

This end line sums up the meaning of the song. LAnd of The Snakes references the location of where a pivotal interaction with an old female friend in which Cole once smashed and dashed brought to Cole’s attention that he was/IS a snake. He preyed on her until he got what he wanted much like the infamous Biblical snake with Adam and Eve.

This album often depicts Cole in a self-deprecating light.

The last two lines might also be Cole comparing himself to his father as he now comes to the realization that he treated this girl the same way his father treated Cole’s mother. This is not the first time he does this, in “Lost Ones” he also gets called out by a girl who says he isn’t worth shit.

Also peep the nice wordplay with the word ‘worth’. Even though Cole is materially rich, he is shown to be morally poor.

In the first line of the hook, Cole says that nothing is impossible, which is a statement of empowerment. The first line of this verse is questioning your moral integrity. If you could do any one thing, would it be something morally corrupt? “You already know who your genie is” could be Cole’s way of implying that you make your own wishes come true.

This line refers to the genie as to God, when asking would the wish be devious this is because normally in religion you do not ask God to assisting in fulfilling sin, but to abstain from it all together. Basically asking if you could get one thing right away from God would it be to please yourself or to please God?

The genie line is also saying if a girl has a devious sexual wish then Cole is her genie that’ll make it come true.

Cole uses this subtle line as imagery pertaining to his personality, continuing exclaiming his hardness as opposite to the softness of others. With this line he could mean that, since day one:

  • He’s always been a horny guy, or, in other words, he was born to having uncommitted sex with women – born to sin.

  • He’s illustrating his maturity compared to others since babies normally cannot get erections.

  • Or maybe he’s was just ready to fuck up the world from the start.

Pixar is Disney’s production company (which it purchased in 2006), which Disney uses for animated films, such as Toy Story. Pixar creates animated or “fake” movies, which serves as an opposite to “real shit”, which Cole claims his music to be like.

Cole used to have to share a room with his brother when he was younger. This is difficult for J Cole, because he can’t even bring girls in to his room that way! He might as well be bunking with his mom.

When she comes over, she’s going to see that Cole has been wearing his brother’s hand me down stuff, which will be embarrassing for him.

The line “Finally got my own bedroom in this bitch” is also talking about his spot in hip-hop’s culture and how he is finally a top, well-known figure in the rap game. “Brother’s room” could refer to his mentor and label boss Jay-Z or his best friend Kendrick Lamar, who already hit it big with m.A.A.d. city.

In the interview below with Cole explains that he had some pretty dark thoughts while writing this album, and even suffered from depression from the pressure he faced.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSzPG0xMpLM&feature=youtu.be

He’s worried that Born Sinner will flop and maybe end his career.

He’s suggesting that part of the reason he’s worried is because he’s letting the Devil in him work, instead of trusting God.

On his Truly Yours 2 EP, Cole hints at the possibility of his album flopping with this line:

But I finally put my Momma in that E class, nigga
And I told her quit her job, but hold your horses
If my next album flops it’s back to the post office, both of us, shit
They’re saying that’s a real possibility
The thought alone is killing me

These lines are also a great play off the previous verse, where he’s asking the devil for his soul back. In these lines he blames the devil for nearly derailing his career, as he said it was on track until he let the devil lead the way.

Now he HAS his soul, and he’s not letting it go ever again for anything.

Cole is hoping that he won’t have to encounter women whom he has had quick sexual endeavors with. It would be odd and cringeworthy if he bumped into one of his ex affairs at the Oscars, where “Academy Awards” are given out for actors and musicians.

This feeling is common among rappers. One MC who has shared the same thought as Cole is Big Sean on his featured verse on Kanye West’s “G.O.O.D. Friday”:

Hold on, that’s the girl you gave a wedding ring? Man, me and my niggas nutted on her everything
