As a kid, Cole grew up in the bad part of town, the ghetto. In many American cities rail road tracks divide the rich and the poor. All he ever wanted to do was get over the other side of those tracks, where life was good.

In Cole’s video for “Who Dat,” he’s walking down railroad tracks in his city, perhaps the one tracks mentioning in this song. .

He also is saying he mastered his craft, and knew how to beat other rappers. Making sure he is the last one standing, or the best one of them all.

He also is talking about the education system and how they try to undermine black males in our society today. He is saying that through college, he has learned the numerous ways they try to discriminate against black males and he now knows how to play that game against them.

Cole recognizes that as a rapper, its almost an obligation to have a cool chain. Therefore, it isn’t really his fault that he’s being materialistic; its part of his job.

And as they say: don’t hate the player; hate the game.

J Cole mentions in the previous line that he is becoming more conscious. Therefore, he recognizes that his jewelry, or “bling,” represents the temptation of money and the negative affects of greed. Meanwhile, such things are painted as a positive thing in other circles (but nothing gets past J Cole).

He compares his necklace to a noose, a rope tied in a fashion used to hang ones self or another person by the neck. In other words, it is deadly. While we recognize that his necklace isn’t literally going to be used to hang himself, he uses this metaphor as a way of showing the negativity of materialism.
