Forming workplace unions allowed poor and working-class workers to bargain for higher wages, health care coverage, retirement pensions and other benefits.

Alabama’s governor at the time was George Wallace, an infamous proponent of segregation, and thus a chief opponent to civil rights advocates like MLK Jr.

Wallace’s inaugural speech just months before asserted the governor’s desire to fight federal efforts to integrate Alabama schools.
