A reference to Das Racist’s hit “Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell”, with a Wu-Tang twist

Particularly potent as Das Racist’s breakout hit, “Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell” led many to peg them as novelty/joke rap act. Heems hits back by turning what at first seems like a tired retread into a quote from a classic rap song, taking a jab at those who don’t take them seriously and demonstrating the hyper-referential rap-nerd material that typifies much of their work.

In C.R.E.A.M Raekwon raps

No question I would speed, for cracks and weed
The combination made my eyes bleed

Heems means Taco Bell and Pizza Hut is dope as [speed] cracks and weed.

A reference to Andy Warhol, who is best known for his depictions of Campbell’s Soup cans. Warhol’s pieces are incredibly valuable, sought after by Jay-Z.

Kool AD is addressing the commodification of street art, an art form which was never intended to by commodified. Grafiti and Hip hop must maintain legitimacy amidst the constant cheapening of the art by corporations and other businesses.

For instance: This restaurant is where I live. It comes on my tv way too often. This is what happens when you let the wrong people get a hold of hip hop.

Heems did, though, merk the cops on a cover of The Strokes' “New York City Cops.”

Fun fact: Heems' “cover” is not a cover song at all but all original lyrics over a beat with a Strokes sample. In his version Heems' verses are a historical account of police brutality in NYC, especially the Sean Bell murder by Queens cops.

It Atlanta rap parlance, the “Trap” is the hood, the ghetto. This is one of the most complex terms in hip hop.

Most obviously, the term implies that folks are trapped by sociopolitical factors in the hood. But “trappers” are people who take their lot in stride and seek alternative means to advance themselves. To “trap,” then, is to hustle.

For instance, Jay-Z says, “Compare me to other trappers.” Jay-Z is hardly still trapped in the confines of his Marcy Houses youth. Jay still flips the term to describe his hustle beyond the hood.

A parody of pop-rap “love songs,” as seen on Heems' single “Womyn.” Heems’s point is probably that proclamations of love have fallen quite far from Shakespeare’s sonnets – “poets” now resort to wishy-washy words like “cool”, “smart”, and “pretty”. Furthermore, they don’t even do interesting things with these words: they just define them.

But you never really know with DR: sometimes they’re joking, sometimes they’re being deadly serious. Here, the words are simple, suggesting young love. It is reminiscent of Big Star’s “Thirteen.”

Governors of Georgia are typically very conservative and blind to the plight of its less fortunate citizens. Though it wasn’t the Governor who made the decision, the politicians of Georgia made Atlanta the first city in the country to dismantle all of its public housing, the very homes that Pill and his folks relied on.
