Lil Herb had some homies from a while back that tried to leave the game (rap, banging, drug dealing) but they could never do it and were most likely killed.

Also notice the Bulls and game wordplay as the Chicago Bulls is his hometown NBA team.

This could also be a reference to Michael Jordan, the greatest player in Bulls history and considered the best in NBA history by many. Jordan retired in 1993, fresh off his first three-peat, to pursue a dream to play baseball. He never made it far in baseball, going through spring training with the White Sox in 1994 only to spend his career in the minor leagues, MJ quit baseball (due to the ongoing MLB strike) and returned to the NBA in 1995.

Slitting the wrists is a method of suicide that involves cutting the artery running through your arm, causing massive blood loss.

In an interview with Complex, Isaiah goes in-depth on the suicide topic. Talking specifically about “West Savannah,” among other things he says:

I’m like a regular [guy]. Most people I talked to have thought about suicide once. So, it’s like special when you do it, like, it’s some fucked up and serious shit. But it was just something that I touched on. It wasn’t something that was like dynamic to my music. There’s way more to my music….Like suicide is the ultimate word to me for being done with everything. When you kill yourself, you are pretty done with everything.

Nami provides an entirely different viewpoint for Jhene. The view of being a provider and living for someone else can open up a whole world of different vantage points and truths for some.

With that, the inseverable connection between mother and daughter has become the alleviation for anything that goes wrong and the propelling force in Jhene’s life. In the same notion, she’s a definite existence, a concrete truth in an otherwise loose world that isn’t as cut and dry.

She also may talk about the strain of weed her favourite, Blue Dream.

Pusha T both confirms and disproves the stereotype of drug dealers become rappers. He’s not entirely a street rapper, despite that sound being highly prevalent.

SZA refers to the angel vs devil conflict, as the devil of her evil thoughts leaves her head for the moment, only to resurface when she has a nightmare.

At the same time, it lies around unnoticed in her dreams, waiting for her to wake up to the life she lives, a reminder that it still exists.

The same old, same old

A platitude is a moral statement that is so overused that it’s no longer thought-provoking. SZA sees the platitudes in the suburban life and struggles for her valued individualism, which would be seen as moral and social defiance.

SZA struggles to maintain herself as unique, and not become just another suburban kid.
