On May 22, 1999, Terence had a brain seizure and collapsed at home. A CAT scan revealed a tumor in his right frontal cortex, which was diagnosed as a “glioblastoma multiforme,” a rare form of brain cancer. He died on April 6, 2000 at age 53. GBM is actually the most common primary brain cancer, though primary brain cancer is much, much rarer than metastases to the brain or benign brain tumors – maybe he had a variant? (There are very few, and they’re rare!)

Anyway, irrelevant. Of note, Columbia has a great neuropathology program and I’m not sure the Beats really took advantage. NYU’s psychedelics research is stronger, and Cornell’s psychoanalytic program stronger, but…

In Wild Combination, a documentary about Allen Ginsberg’s musician protege Arthur Russell, Russell’s parents describe his Iowa teenage years much in this way. Russell was about ten years younger than McKenna.
