These first stanzas follow the head-to-toe order and tone of a forensic examiner making an external examination of a corpse at autopsy — which is what later happens.

Her shoulders describedas narrow reflects her narrow-minded nature. Auden uses hHer figure reflects her personality.

Busts are a symbol of sexuality. Her lack of breasts confirms her unattractiveness and repressed sexuality.

Note that this is an ironic reversal of the traditional blazon, where a woman’s beauty is described by enumerating her characteristics — hair, face, neck, shoulders etc. Miss Gee is far from stunning.

The sarcoma replaces Miss Gee, the person. Now dead, she is no more than her disease.

The polite, professional address, ‘gentlemen’, may be said in mocking tone, given that the surgeon hasn’t rebuked the student for laughing. Clearly it is permissable to disrespect patients.

Ostensibly from the P.O.V. of Dracula, who Schmilsson is supposed to be in the movie. The groove seems to hint at “Coconut,” recreating the feeling of childhood, or of hating oneself for being pigeonholed as a writer of novelty songs when the song was a smart novelty song. Lyrically, it’s closer to “All My Life” from Pussy Cats, if less orchestral and ambitious. It’s easy to get actively fearful for Nilsson listening to these songs, which was what made them good, which is what the documentary Who Is Harry Nilsson and Why Is Everybody Talking About Him? argued. (He didn’t write that song.)

Celebrities who seem impervious to upset are always the most ready to extol the brilliance of Nilsson. Jason Schwartzman’s dog is named Arrow, as in “Me and My.” Jimmy Fallon used to say often that it got him through a break-up-slash-the end of his SNL career. Of course both are living, breathing Nilsson song characters by design, without the prodigy.

From Son of Dracula/Son of Schmilsson era (a.k.a. his nutty alkie collaborations with Ringo Starr). One of his sleeper hits. The most childlike joyful version of pain since, well, Lennon.

For Halloween, plus American malaise.

Tinder as death and new life. Begin with the end: Callback to death via river styx (come sail away!)

Aside interesting only to the annotator: Charon is the ferryman of the dead, and internist Rita Charon is the Sarah Beller-like posthippie domestic leader of the “narrative medicine” movement about negotiating life, death, and sex through the diseasebed

LEMON began calling me MoMilli on Google Reader, though I have hated the nickname Mo since I was a child. I think it was a reference to “A Milli,” though he always said “MOMILLIMOMILLIMOMILLI,” which I associate more closely with “Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!” from the Homeboy Shopping Network on In Living Color. The HSN inspired the first rap I ever wrote, “Homeboy Don’t Eat Dogs,” at age six.

MetaWorldPeace stopped using MoMilli for the most part after one of our mutual friends at the time and I had a falling-out – the friend called me MoMilli. Or maybe I told him I didn’t like it.

It’s convenient as a matter of professionalism, though many people, including other doctors and writers, share my name.
