Adam has long ago accepted that he can’t be counted on. Failing people many times has taught him that lesson.

So to avoid hurting people again… or at least letting them know what might happen…. he tells them that he can’t be trusted, and that she needs to runaway as fast she can.

Adam begins to paint a picture of this screwed up relationship by starting us off with rock ‘n roll’s own version of a double entendre!

The relationship’s problems (which are mostly the man’s fault) are hard to change, and they both realize that, but at the end of the day she’s going to be on her knees begging for him to stay due to their strong feelings for each other.

#AND

The relationship has fallen from an emotional connection on both parts to a physical connection – sexually based. Their fury for each other after the fight turns into make up sex, which leads into her on her knees giving him a blow job.

Somewhere between the second verse and the third verse, the girlfriend found out and broke up with Adam, and alas, it was true: The other girl was just a whore with no emotional interest in Adam.

Now he pays for his actions in lonely nights filled with excuses and tears.

But he realizes it’s all for nothing, because for every excuse he comes up with to defend his actions, the one big reason for his pain comes in and slashes it down: It’s all his fault.

The girls bestfriend, who Adam has admittedly fallen for, pursues an interest in Adam which eventually leads to an affair between the two.

The girl begins feeding Adam information about what his girlfriend ACTUALLY says about him behind his back… while seducing him into bed.

Now is the point where, maybe, maybe there’s a chance that she’s lying to Adam the whole time and his girlfriend actually isn’t like she says at all, and is in fact only tricking him so he’ll sleep with/fall for her.

The “locks all the doors” continues the end of the first verse – she’s locking the doors of the home she makes him feel like he’s in, thus sealing his feelings for her.

The “other girl” of this story, who also happens to be his girlfriend’s most trusted friend, is the one that’s there for him when his girlfriends puts him through terrible shit.

At the end of the verse, his feelings for her are set in stone once he realizes that he feels more at home with her than his own girl.

Falling into a fallacy that most heartbroken ex’s fall into: If he/she see’s what they’ve done to me, they HAVE to come back…

The Script touches up on this subject with their song “Nothing”, with the lyrics

So I stumble there, along the railings and the fences
I know if we’re face to face then she’ll come to her senses
Every drunk step I take leads me to her door
If she sees how much I’m hurting, she’ll take me back for sure

Suffering from the pains of loneliness, Adam Duritz craves companionship and all the good things that come from it.

The “staring back at me” means he wants it there waiting for him when he needs it.

Think of it like this: You’re with a girl (or boy), and you look at them, only to find out that they were already looking at you. Good feeling, am I right?

Adam wishes to have that. This echoes out a desire for an ego boost as well, as the thought of someone needing you is a pretty big compliment to you.

Unfortunately though, the woman he needs has left him.
