In Roald Dahl’s classic children’s book James and the Giant Peach, the titular peach rolls into the Atlantic Ocean with James and his insect friends inside. One of the insects, Ms. Spider, spins a web that James uses to catch a flock of seagulls. He ties them to the peach and uses them to fly the gang to New York City, a place James dreams to visit.

On July 28, 2017, an edited version of an episode of Pete Holmes' podcast You Made It Weird that featured celebrity doctor Dr. Joel Fuhrman was uploaded to the Vulfpeck YouTube channel. In it, Fuhrman discusses the positive effects of a proper diet and the negative aspects of unhealthy eating as well as the harmfulness of the medical profession. The video is titled Regular Bean Eater and the video description links to a Regular Bean Eater website.

Fuhrman’s work focuses on his “nutritarian diet,” a diet composed of nutrient-dense and plant-rich foods. In other words, a whole-food plant-based diet. On the website regularbeaneater.com, Jack Stratton, bandleader of Vulfpeck, has chronicled his experience trying the nutritarian diet for 30 days during the summer of 2017 from a witty first person.

Day 23: After years of thinking with my eyes closed, I experience full on #mushroomlevel transcendence using a iPhone meditation app.

After Jack’s 30 days were over, on October 9, 2017, the Vulfpeck YouTube channel uploaded a video called G-BOMBS Salad Tutorial. Jack Stratton shows how to make a nutritarian salad main dish with the G-BOMBS superfoods–greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries, seeds–while assorted Vulfpeck family members accompany him. The G-BOMBS salad is heavily promoted on Dr. Fuhrman’s website, where he uses the following graphic.

“Refreshing” here means reloading–think of refreshing a browser page online–not new or rejuvenating. These obsessive images are the opposite of “refreshing” in that sense.
