worked at sdsu’s concert venues
during my last year studying there.
got paid to attend concerts and help.
ushering, tickets, etc.

one of the many shows i saw was
maverick city music and kirk franklin.
pretty much exactly the same set as above.
transcendent experience, smiled incessantly.
he got me good on the whole special guest thing.
thought i’d include it here.

oddly,
i don’t like freestyle rapping,
but i like improv, and i love scatting.
the liberty, the boundlessness.

this paired with discovering vocalese,
the act of adding words to the tune
of an existing jazz solo performance.
such intricate melodies you have to
lyrically finesse your way through.

i thought i’d do vocalese, in reverse.
find an existing text,
improvise a solo with it.

the first candidate was
a letter albert einstein sent
to president franklin roosevelt.

bit too long, bit too dry.

i thought it was overdue
for ultra to return to the realm
of twisted remorseless humor,
so i scatted someone’s suicide note.

first take, only take.
as is jazz tradition.
