A or Om is used within a lot of religions and philosophies, generally a phrase or sound capable of eliciting spiritual knowledge or transformation. Mantras can be used the same as affirmations or repeated during meditation as a goal or for concentration and purpose. Open your subconscious to understand more of yourself and unlock your mind for development

Saul plays with the concept of “om” in his song “Om Nia American”

Also, “finding one’s mantra” can be likened to seeking that singular formula or set of principles that can then be used to “awaken” the subconscious, and thus transform oneself into a better being. Saul’s mystical!

This song was written during the turbulent marriage between Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy, sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. Ironically, Anna had written some of the lyrics when the song was first written and intended to be a love ballad

In alchemy, the ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ is a legendary stone that is said to harness the ability to turn normal metals into gold and possibly be a key to rejuvenation and eternal life. With this metaphor, Saul is saying that our figurative hearts, as in our love, aspirations, and ambitions can bring us ‘gold’, bring us what we need or hold precious, and through our alchemy, music, we can create or give our ‘Philosopher’s Stone’ this power.

Also, the reference music being “our alchemy” is an indication that, just like the classical alchemists used minerals, salts, herbs, and fire to seek the transmutation of elements and themselves into higher states, so can we use the music we create (and listen to), to do the same in our lives.

‘Motherfucker’ is an aggressive word commonly associated with the black community. It’s possible that Saul Williams is using this term ironically/sarcastically. Self-Actualization is the state of realizing and recognizing one’s full potential and begin to act on it

When he says “motherfuckers” he means literally people who desecrate that which is feminine, maternal, matriarchy et cetera.

The Diasporic Community is the scattered people of the Atlantic Slave Trade dispersed throughout the world who, through the dispersion have lost major connections to their history and their collective identity.
