Joliet Correctional Center is the setting for the fictional Fox River State Penitentiary.
This is the first we heard of a Fox River prison, but we’ll definitely be seeing more of it.
MICHAEL: I'm not playing games. Open it.
BANK WORKER: Sir, you have a half a million dollars cash in your bag, don't you think it would be better if...
[The sound of police sirens as they pull up outside the bank. Michael holds his hands in the air]
POLICEMAN: [Out of shot, through a megaphone] This is the police. You are completely surrounded.
[Michael turns around to see there are a lot of police aiming their guns at him from behind their cars]
POLICEMAN [Out of shot, through a megaphone] Put down your weapon.
[Michael takes another gun out of the front of his waistband]
POLICEMAN: [Out of shot, through a megaphone] Put down your weapon now!
[Michael drops both guns]
[Michael is in court with his solicitor, Veronica, for his hearing]
JUDGE: Rarely in the case of armed robbery do we hear a plea of no contest. Are you sure about this, Mr Scofield?
MICHAEL: I'm sure, your honour. Prison Break – Pilot

Hmm. I wonder why he purposely fired multiple shots, brought two guns, and refused to be satisfied with $500,000?
Kidding, it’s due to the fact that Michael wanted to ensure he would get put in the same prison as his brother. Without the gunshots, Michael would have been put in a lesser security prison due to his lack of record.
Yet again dramatic irony occours when the bank teller questions Michael about his refusal to leave with his already large amount of money. Michael wanted to be caught, and wanted to ensure that he didn’t get shot for trying to resist arrest.
Michael pleads no contest as well, to ensure that Veronica doesn’t convince the judge to put him in a lesser facility.

This is the first we see the origami swan. Later in the series it is used to communicate within the prison, flirt with Sara Tancredi, let Sara know where to find him, and even to let Agent Mahone know to help Michael out at the GATE building.
