Deathmatch is a term for an all out fight in games, most popular in the FPS genre. If it is just Deathmatch, that means it’s every man for himself, free-for-all. If it is Team Deathmatch, there are two even teams. Either way, the only objective in these deathmatches is to kill more people than the other team.

These deathmatches are very popular with beginner players, and people who don’t like to play the objective. In these modes, pretty much everyone is a lone wolf, finding their own way through the map and employing their own strategy. There is esentially no need to use teamwork.

Mute is your best friend when you run into that annoying squeaker on Call of Duty who continues to claim he had relations with your mother.

The mute fuction makes it to where you can no longer hear a specific user’s voice chat, and they can no longer hear yours. Most online multiplayer games have this function, and many also have a “mute all” function if you really don’t want to hear anyone.

Fatalities are extravagant finishing moves in the Mortal Kombat series. This includes spines being ripped out via decapitation, entire bodies being burned, monsters screaming so loud heads explode, and many more.

Fatalities were in Mortal Kombat from the beginning. The first game caused great controversy amoung the general public, leading to the creation of the ESRB ratings board. The 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot was also banned in Germany, Austrailia, and South Korea.

The world fatality has become a modern meme, being used whenever someone knocks someone out, or insults someone deeply.

Cutscenes are cinematic events that take place during a game and are uncontrollable. Almost all games use cutscenes to further the story, often filled with dialouge. Sometimes they will feature quick time events in them, which make them more like interactive cutscenes. The graphics in cutscenes are typically better than the gameplay graphics.

Many games now feature cutscenes that are semi controllable, meaning you can move the camera around but not do anything else.

Cutscene heavy games include Metal Gear Solid 4, Heavy Rain, and Yakuza 4

Achievments are a way to reward and encourage players in video games. Xbox 360 was the first console to have a system setup for achievements, and soon after the Playstation 3 implemented trophies.

Achievments, depending on their difficulty, will award you “gamerscore”. This gamerscore is a measure of skill to some, and is a reason to strive for all achievments.

OP is an initialism for the term “Overpowered.” If something is unreasonably good or unmatched by any other thing, it is considered overpowered. This is brought up in any competitive multiplayer game where players can battle against each other.

Characters, teams, weapons, and abilities that have an unfair advantage over all others are considered overpowered. If enough players complain about this, said thing will likely be nerfed.

Overpowered is often misused as a term. If someone is skillful and can use something well, players on the losing end will cry out “OMG OP PLS NERF” despite the fact that it is not OP at all.

XP is an abreviation/initialism for the term “Experience points”. These points signify your character’s experience and time put into the game, and you typically get rewards if you reach a certain amount. Often you will “level up” as well when you reach a certain amount of experience points.

Multiplayer games will often have “Double XP Weekends” to get more people playing their game, as well as allowing players to level up their character more quickly.

Assist is a term used in multiplayer games, mostly FPS'. You start to kill or shoot someone, and then someone else finishes them off. This gives you an assist.

Assists are most thought of in games like Call of Duty where the action is fast-paced and multiple people are bound to target one person at the same time.

Games like Battlefield 4 are now catching on to how better employ assists, and now if you do a majority of damage to an enemy, you are awarded the kill.

They can also be used in fighting games like Marvel vs. Capcom.

Downloadable Content

Downloadable content an addition to the game that is available by download usually at a cost.
Map packs in Call Of Duty are a type of DLC.

DLC itself is often met with much disdain by fans, especially day one DLC. This shows that the developers are 100% after money, because they had the ability to release that content on the disk.
