I'll get up 'fore I get down, run myself in the ground
'Fore I put some wack shit out
When the Music Stops by Eminem (Ft. D12)

Em promises that he will work harder than humanly possible to eliminate any bad tracks. There have been a few slip ups, but overall he has stayed true to this.

But he kept smiling like a clown, facial expression looking silly Elevators (Me & You) by Outkast

André either realizes that this man is trying to play him, or actually doesn’t remember him from high school; either way he has no clue who he is and why he decided to come up to talk. But this man continues to put on a fake smile and act friendly. It’s amazing how far some people will go for a free handout.

Got stopped at the mall the other day, heard a call from the other way
That I just came from, some nigga was saying something, talking 'bout
Smoke something "Hey man, you remember me from school?" "No not really"
Elevators (Me & You) by Outkast

This guy walks up to André as he’s leaving the mall with a friendly smile and the typical 1990’s Atlanta greeting of “smoke something”, then starts up a conversation about their time in school together. But Dre’s reaction makes it clear that he didn’t actually go to school with this guy, he probably just wants a handout or an excuse to talk to someone famous.

New Orleans rapper Curren$y later made a track over this beat titled “Smoke Something” in reference to this line.

Red is the flag Goulish (Pusha T Diss) by Lil Wayne

In Exodus 23:1, Pusha disses Wayne for waving the flag of the Bloods. But Wayne makes it clear he won’t stop.

His head up his ass, I'mma have to head-butt him Goulish (Pusha T Diss) by Lil Wayne

Maybe Wayne should have articulated his head/ass and head-butt wordplay a bit differently. He was probably going for Pusha figuratively thinking he is the shit, but only because his head is in his ass. Then, to utilize the head/ass/butt wordplay, he inserts a way to suggest he would fight Pusha.

But then there is this interpretation from our friend BigGhostFase: https://twitter.com/bigghostfase/status/206253753609883648

That's why you'll never be my neighbors
Smile as you waving but we know you niggas hate us
Exodus 23:1 by Pusha T (Ft. The-Dream)

Pusha knows that YMCMB are two-faced bitches, so there is no more need to pretend they still like him.

They could never be his neighbors because he would never want to keep anyone like them near him, and they don’t have enough respect to live in his neighborhood.

Round here we don't play that
A to the K that, spray that, lay back
Exodus 23:1 by Pusha T (Ft. The-Dream)

Is saying that he doesn’t fuck around — he will take an AK, ride by your place, unload his clips and simply chill out somewhere as the police are all over the crime scene.

The ‘Lay Back’ part could have a few meanings:

  1. A more literal reference to the recoil made by a spraying AK, which would force your body backwards. In the music video, when Pusha says this line he mimics laying backwards from the recoil
  2. In a drive by the shooter will put the passenger seat back after they shoot. They lay back to avoid being seen and getting shot by any retaliators.

Put me to the body, nigga
First 48 put us to them bodies, nigga
Exodus 23:1 by Pusha T (Ft. The-Dream)

First 48 is a TV show on A&E where they follow homicide detectives for the first 48 hours after a homicide. There’s an episode where the person accused of murder tells the detectives “put me to the body”. Pusha talked about that episode on Juan Epstein with Peter Rosenberg & Cipha Sounds

Drake claims to be about that life, but we doubt it…..

Say everything's hostile Around My Way by Lupe Fiasco

Trying to demonstrate the bad side to some things that most people don’t think twice about. Most people are easy to criticize things like suicide bombers, but they don’t see the wrong in others that go on around them.
