The original saying “too many cooks will spoil the broth” means that while it’s good to have extra help, too many people contributing to a project will actually be detrimental.
In this context, it likely means that there are too many cliches going around TV and it’s hurting the quality. It seems like every show these days is either a sitcom about a group of friends or family, or a crime/medical drama.
