Side note: This “reassuring lie” is arguably the biggest meme in all of Nolan’s films. All of his protagonists lie to themselves or others in a big way, whether it be Angier convincing himself Borden tried to kill his wife, Batman deciding people deserve better than the truth, or Cobb’s inability to see the truth about Mal. All of these lies drive the plots of their respective movies, and they often drive the liar close to madness.

Anita Bryant first became famous as a beauty pageant winner responsible for Florida orange juice ads, but her actions in the late 1970s have caused her to go down as one of the greatest bigots of all time.

Bryant kicked off the movement to repeal gay ordinance with her Save Our Children campaign based in Florida. She felt condoning homosexual behavior went against Biblical values and was a strong opposer of the gay rights movement.

It is common for American civil rights activists to cite this line from The Declaration of Independence because it is perhaps the most egregiously violated part of the entire document.

Most people who resist civil rights movements claim that they are against anything that goes against “tradition”, which makes pointing out that this country was founded upon equality for all even more effective.

One of the first hints that should have tipped us off that the story was fake is the fact that “Kobayashi”, a presumably Japanese lawyer, was played by Pete Postlethwaite – an English actor!

We learn by the end where the name really comes from.
