This shows how deeply the people around Don Corleone care about showing their respect and gratitude for him. Luca Brasi is one of Don’s more respected hitmen and a member of his inner circle, yet he still feels the need to show his appreciation for the wedding invitation and even writes himself a script to make sure the thank-you is perfect.

Fun Fact: This scene was inserted after the scene of Luca in the Godfather’s office. The actor Lenny Montana was nervous to perform in front of Marlon Brando and stumbled over his lines, so this scene was filmed to provide continuity.

Lenny Montana was also an enforcer for the Colombo Crime Family.

Tarantella is a rapidly-paced folk dance traditionally played at weddings, originating in Southern Italy.

As myth goes, the tarantella dance was performed by someone who’s been bitten by a tarantula in order to keep from succumbing to the venom – if a townsperson was bitten, music would be played and the bitten person would dance non-stop until “healed”, hence the frantic nature of the dance.

The visceral combination of celebration (dance) and near-death (fighting poison) as captured in the tarantella dance connects to the contrast struck in the opening scene as a whole: the bright and joyful celebration (the wedding) and the dark, violent tones of the Don’s study (Bonasera pleading the Don to enact revenge).

This goes a long way in characterizing Don Corleone right from the opening scene. It clearly isn’t out of the question for him to order the murder of someone considering that’s exactly what Bonasera expects him to do, but he still refuses because he doesn’t see it as necessary.

This shows that the Godfather’s legendary respect is not only derived from his intimidation, but also from his fairness and attempts to maintain justice even when the police fail to do so.

i was at my parents crib in CT playing PS3 and hittin the bong with one of my homies when DJ Semi sent me a text saying to check my email. when i heard this beat in there i immediately put the controller down and started writing. he knows i’m a sucker for Breaking Bad, so that audio clip in the beginning had me hooked. i wrote a 16 and the hook pretty quick, but saved the second verse open because i knew my big bro Apathy would sound amazing on this (which is does), so i sent it over to him. he ended up spitting a 20 bar verse, so i had to go back to my 16 and rewrite it so i could match him. after that i had Semi add some scratches to add a nice finishing touch. this song is raw as fuck, if you came to hear bars, this song is for you.

This speaks to the absence of religion in The Great Gatsby, particularly in the Valley of Ashes. You’d have a hard time convincing the dirt poor members of the Valley that there is an all-powerful God protecting and watching over them at all times, so many begin to reject or dissociate themselves from organized religion. In Wilson’s case, he stops going to church and begins viewing symbols of material wealth such as the T.J. Eckelburg billboard as God since his real ruler is money.

Bunk says this in response to Omar, after Omar explains his decision to testify against Bird was based upon the fact Bird doesn’t have a code and is willing to shoot ordinary citizens. The full quote is:

Bird trifling, basically. Killing everyday working men and all. I mean don’t get it twisted, I do some dirt too, but I ain’t never put my gun on nobody who wasn’t in the game.

This becomes important later in the series, when Bunk decides to free Omar after the murder of a grocery store employee is pinned on him, since Bunk knows Omar lives by “that golden rule”.
