Eminem’s father left the family when Em was just a child and never returned. His rocky relationship with his mother, Debbie Mathers, is well documented, and Em often accuses her of having mental problems, using drugs, abusing him, etc.

But if he had just grown up in an ideal two parent home he might not have been as good of a rapper, because the anger directed towards these two helped fuel a lot of the material from his earliest albums.

Picking up a pen is in this case metaphorical for starting to rap (starting to write rap lyrics).

But what really would have happened if Marshall Mathers never picked up a pen?

  • first off, as a troubled youth living in a rough area of Detroit it’s tough to see a happy ending for young Marshall
  • the “color barrier” in hip-hop might not have been broken yet, so acts like Mac Miller, Chris Webby, Yelawolf, and MGK could have trouble reaching any degree of success
  • every college stadium in America would have to find a new pump up song if “Lose Yourself” was never written
  • and countless moms across the nation would have never been horrified the first time they ever heard “Kim”

Eminem’s alter ego Slim Shady is as twisted as Marshall and Kim Mathers combined – which is saying a lot considering both of them were pretty volatile drug users at the time.

Eminem’s poor upbringing really became an issue once he hit puberty and transitioned into an angry teenager. This is when he first got into hip-hop and finally discovered an outlet through which he could vent some of his rage at the outside world. Em uses the small dick but big balls line on the previous song as well, to imply that he isn’t as much of a “dick” (asshole) as people think, he is just “ballsy” enough to say what he thinks without fearing any backlash.

Eminem blames his current day immaturity on a lack of a proper upbringing when he was younger. Eminem is pretty harsh on both of his parents, and often blames them for his erratic personality that contributed to his reputation as a “criminal”.

There’s also the other meaning of the word “raised” (as in to elevate). So, he’s asking how can he grow UP, when he was never RAISED.

The only times you should ever fire a gun is when you’re forced to in order to protect yourself, or when you are positive that you can shoot at your rivals until they reach the point of no return.

Big Boi doesn’t carry a gun to show off (“flex”), he does it to “protect his neck” like the classic Wu-Tang song.

Instead of continuing to mope about what happened between him and Erykah, André accepts that they are no longer going to be together, and focuses his attention on being the best father possible.

The rhyme scheme and meter end with “school.” Andre adding “And graduation” after the verse would normally be expected to end, as well as delivering it more slowly and with more emphasis, illustrates the depth of his commitment to their son and that he’s in it for the long haul.

It turns out that 3 Stacks lived up to his promise, since his son Seven graduated in 2016 and was recieved acceptance letters from four colleges.

If André and Erykah never had a real emotional connection, then this breakup would be easier to deal with. But since they did, André has been spending so much time praying in hopes that God will relight the fire between the two of them that he is beginning to hurt his knees.

What’s also brilliant about this is the double rhyme scheme Three Stacks has with these lines:

Asking what happened to the feeling that her and me had
I pray so much about it need some knee pads
It happened for a reason one can’t be mad

The “eses” are formidable Mexican drug dealers that cleverly began using slang to describe their products, because they know that actually using drug terms where the police can hear you can get you put in jail (“the clink”) pretty quickly. “Flour” is coke, and “lettuce” is weed.

This is also a reference to the song “Don’t Speak” by Gwen Stafani’s group No Doubt.
