“Snapping” on a track means to really go in over an instrumental. Drake’s longtime producer Noah “40” Shebib is close friends with Drizzy and has produced many of his best-known songs where he tends to snap – such as this one.

Drake tries to “make light” of his somewhat serious problems so that he doesn’t come off as overly whiny, but sometimes he wonders if this is the best way to deal with his problems. This is also a pun on The Clapper™, since owners of The Clapper™ can literally “make light” by clapping their hands and turning the lights on.

Drake avoided drug dealing and chose to make his millions legally through endorsements with companies like Sprite. Additionally, Drake drug of choice is not cocaine but rather codeine, and his preferred drink to mix it with is not Coke but rather Sprite.

Drake lives in the moment – while most people would make sure to take pictures of memorable vacations like a Vegas trip, Drake doesn’t have to because his vacations are unforgettable. Additionally, he enjoys living in the moment more than reflecting on the past, so pictures don’t mean much to him.

Besides, everyone knows taking pictures in Vegas doesn’t end well…

PROPOSED SUGGESTION: Probably also a commentary on the fact that, even in 2010 when this album came out, most people were more concerned with showing their experiences on Twitstagram rather than living in their moments.

Eminem has to possess Royce’s body in order to communicate after his death, so he traps him into his room and starts throwing shit around like he’s in The Exorcist, hoping that this will scare him enough to let the ghost of Slim Shady enter his body.

Seismographs pick up on vibrations. Those who believe in ghosts and spirits and whatnot believe that they can use seismographs to pick up vibrations left by the undead and therefore locate them. Since Eminem is a ghost now, the only way he can communicate is through a device that translates his vibrations into words, then transmits this information straight into Royce’s head so that he can speak for Em.

Generally, rappers will say “fuck bitches, get money” because they only feel that their male friends are loyal. But Jay has been screwed over by both genders, so he is essentially saying “fuck people, get money”, which explains why he often feels lonely/depressed.

Also a possible reference to “Get Money” by Junior M.A.F.I.A. featuring Biggie, where the hook goes “fuck bitches, get money / fuck niggas, get money”

Jay continues the light imagery in this verse, and once again claims that the bright lights in the big city are responsible for changing his personality. Looks like Jay might be borrowing Kanye’s technique of using lights as symbols for fame, e.g. “Flashing Lights,” “All of the Lights,” “Street Lights.”

This line is likely also a reference to Kanye’s song “Monster” from the same year, that also featured Hov talking about turning into a monster.

Consolidated Edison is a giant energy company; Jay’s source of energy is much greater than your average rapper, and he uses this power to metaphorically “light up” every city and night club he performs at.

Thomas Edison, along with Hiram Maxin and Joesph Swan, perfected the light bulb, an invention by Humphrey Davy.

Light bulbs are typically fixed to the ceiling, hence “connected to a higher power”. A light bulb usually uses 60 watts of power, so Jay’s exaggeration shows just how powerful and bright he is.

In the classic film The Godfather, the eponymous character warns his son Michael that whoever tries to set up a meeting with a character called Don Barzini has turned against Michael and that the meeting will be designed to kill him.

Michael learns that Salvatore Tessio is the one who betrayed him when he comes up to Michael, claiming that he has set up the meeting and promising to sit in on it to ensure his safety. So what Jay is trying to pass on to Drake is that oftentimes beef doesn’t arise from a deep hatred or a violent diss track, but rather from a close friend that turns on you and begins misleading you.
