Ce film sera un spin-off de The Spiderman, alors que le troisième volet de la franchise était initialement prévu pour cette date, il a été décalé à 2018.
Sony Pictures a donc annoncé ce spin-off pour faire patienter les fans.Ce spin-off parlera des 6 grands ennemis de Spiderman : Caméléon, Docteur Octopus, Mysterio, le Rhino, l'Homme-Sable et le Bouffon vert.

Le script est en cours d'écriture, il devrait réunir les acteurs principaux et faire la part belle à Gambit et Quicksilver.

Miles Teller jouera le rôle de Mr Fantastic, Kate Mara jouera la femme invisible, Michael B. Jordan jouera La Torche & Jamie Bell jouera La Chose.
Cependant, Marvel Studios menacerait la promotion de ce film, car ils ne souhaitent pas que 20th Century Fox continue à exploiter une franchise qui appartient à Marvel.
Cependant, Marvel laisserait les droits de distribution à la Fox pour la franchise X-Men qui est très lucrative.

Après le succès du 1er volet, le réalisateur rempile pour une suite, et sait déjà de quoi elle va parler. Le 11 août 2014 il a déclaré :
Je sais vraiment où je veux aller avec Guardians 2. J'ai beaucoup d'idées d'histoires et je sais quels personnages vont apparaître. Il y a d'ailleurs des documents écrits, que détiennent certaines personnes, sur le père de Peter Quill et leur relation mais aussi beaucoup de choses sur Yondu et sur Drax que personne ne sait encore. […] Certains de ces détails font partis d'un plan du film qui existe déjà, sans parler des éléments à propos des différentes cultures de la galaxie. Il y a des informations sur les cultures Xandariennes et Krees que j'ai écrit ou qui sont dans ma tête, mais aussi sur les Kryloriens et les Ravageurs. […] Je pense que Yondu est un personnage vraiment important de cet univers, tout comme Nebula donc je pense que nous verrons beaucoup plus de ces personnages.
Le casting devrait donc rester le même pour jouer l'équipe de héros de l'espace. Bien entendu il n'y pas encore de date de tournage ni de synopsis officiel.
Ce film devrait donc être le 4ème film de la phase 3 des Marvel Studios.
