An infamous Washington Post article about the riot grrrl movement took this song as autobiographical, saying that Hanna had accused her father of abusing her. This claim was based only on lyrics, not any clear statement from Hanna, let alone an interview. This hurtful statement contributed greatly to mistrust of mainstream media by Hanna and others involved in riot grrrl, and the eventual “media blackout” attempt to control messaging and protect themselves. As Hanna stated recently in an interview:

My father did not rape me. It taught me a big lesson about how a lot of reporters don’t fact-check anything."

As Walt looks at the page containing the mashmallow recipe in “Bullet Points” (Season 4, Episode 4) he reads “Two sticks dairy-free soy margarine, 2/3 cup turbinado sugar”, ingredients that appear nowhere in this recipe. While one could argue that this is a reflection of Walt’s delusional relationship with reality, more likely it’s a simple, minor continuity error.

One of the ingredients Walt lists is in the recipe, albeit in a different amount: turbinado sugar and “raw sugar” are one and the same. No margarine of any kind is listed, though

In Cinderella’s Big Score, Maria Raha writes that this song “worshipped and the alter of punk women” and that with this line, Bikini Kill is:

Turning not only the notion of sexual aggressor from male to female, but replacing stereotypical female-female jealousy with physical and emotional attraction. The attraction and love Bikini Kill expresses in “Rebel Girl” is for the swaggering outcast, the truly unique and sexually free woman"
(Cinderella’s Big Score, P. 207)
