From the Instagram account @dissect-podcast, he recognizes the lines “What’s a king to a god? What’s a god to a non-believer” is in reference to Dragonball Abriged

the line “whats a king to a god, whats a god to a non believer” is exactly the same phrase as in a Dragon Ball Z movie released 1993.

This line is a double entendre and can also be interpreted as “who was rubbing the wood like kinky shepherd”. Shepherd’s walk around with large wooden staffs to help them heard their sheep/livestock. It makes sense that Kanye would invoke use of a double entendre on his collaboration album with Jay Z, who is one of the greatest double/triple entendre rappers of all time.

This line is also a double entendre – Kiki Shepard but also “kinky shepherd”. Keeping with the biblical themes in this song, shepherds were known to carry wooden sticks called crooks. “Rubbing the wood like kinky shepherd” is another way to interpret this line.

In these lines Kanye is talking about a binding of some sort between two people in a relationship who choose not to go by the stereotypical rules of being in a relationship thus they allow certain things that aren’t deemed to be okay by society to happen in their relationship for as long as the other party is aware of what the other is up to. Forming “a new religion” of love.

Kanye might be making emphasis on religion and education being very powerful mind-controlling outlets in society today. He’s trying to tell us to look beyond what we’re taught in school, religious gathering, etc because they’re telling us what they want us to know, not what we need to know.

Polygamy (which most religions do not condone) and polyamory (which is the concept that Kanye raps about in this song) are two very different things. I think this annotation should speak more to the concept of polyamory that Kanye raps about in this song as opposed to polygamy. While there is no doubt Kanye does enjoy having multiple women, to hint towards polygamy, he even alludes to the fact that his brand of lifestyle is truly polyamory in this song (“So never fuck nobody without telling me”).

Kanye emphasizes that the people that our society looks to for knowledge, ironically, won’t provide insight into the nature of sex, love, and faithfulness/monogamy in the same candid way that these tattoos do. A pastor is held responsible for professing the Word of God and its values of morality and monogamy. A teacher is expected by society to transmit knowledge in an apolitical way and provide little opinion on real, but controversial issues like poverty and love. These couple of bars provide more skepticism of an inflexible society that does a poor job of guiding normal people.
