Mario Puzo was the author of The Godfather. In the novel, the character of Johnny Fontane, a mob-connected singer and actor, is based on Sinatra. Sinatra was reported to have confronted and threatened Puzo about this in a restaurant in Hollywood in 1970.

Cuban-born bandleader, actor, and television producer Desi Arnaz, who owned Desilu studios along with his wife Lucille Ball, was producer for the 1960s television show The Untouchables. The show depicted federal agent Eliot Ness who was famous for taking on Al Capone and the Mafia. Sinatra (long rumored to have mob ties) took great offense at the series depictions of Italian-Americans, and the two of them argued publicly about this. There were rumors that the Mafia and/or Sinatra ordered a hit on Desi Arnaz over the show.
