Since Aesop is on the fence about his religious beliefs and just wants someone to make the choice for him, this is one of the options he has available to him. He wants an ideal 50’s Americano home. A red door symbolizes religion and spirituality and in Catholicism is means safety within. This is also why many Church doors are red.

Everything else about Aesop’s fairy tail home only presents his legacy as a member of society and nothing more.

Trap = area where drugs are sold

People have stopped listening to hip hop that has a message and instead support weak rappers who put out meaningless trap music about drugs, women, cars, the high life, etc.

It is also a reference to the sub genre of hip hop known as trap music that focuses on sweeping sub-bass, breaks, crisp snares, scratching, heavy use of 808s, layered synths, repeated samples, and sped up hi-hats. It originated in the south and has slowly been gaining more mainstream appeal as of late, especially in comparison to “conscious” Hip Hop which tends to be on the opposite side of the spectrum lyrically.

Aesop is starting off the verse by addressing is younger self. He is talking to a younger version of himself from back when he used to skateboard. Eating shit essentially means wiping out and he is trying to console himself and his clumsy two left feet which is a term most used to describe a bad dancer.

The expression ‘skate or die’ is far more melodramatic than necessary, with death completely separate from any need to or not to skate.

The term Skate of Die originated in the 80’s with the rise of Skateboard culture which Aesop embraced when he skated in his youth.

Aesop was quoted as saying in and interview with MagnetMagazine

Everything I ever needed to know about life I learned from growing up skateboarding. The first skate video I owned was a VHS copy of Future Primitive and it pretty much changed my life. I guess I was never really into team sports much, and skating really promoted individualism in a way that resonated with me.

It is also a reference to a 1988 Skateboarding game Aesop played when he was a child, when interviewed by Thrasher Magazine with the question Did you beat me at skate or did I let you win? he said…

I totally beat you with witnesses present. Don’t pull that shit. I did a fucking ollie airwalk on flat first try after not having done one in maybe 10 years, God damnit. Don’t steal my shine.

One of Aesop’s friends wants to forget his home life. Assuming his father crossed the line at home before by hitting him. “grotesque over stepping”. What is worse is that his friend’s father was a man of the church but came home and over stepped his boundaries.

Aesop was raised Catholic so this friend was probably a member of his church and his father the churches Minister. Knowing such a hypocrisy as such a young age is probably one of the factors that drove him from the church and towards making songs like Holy Smokes.
