The chorus is built around the phrase “none shall pass,” which expresses a sense of hip-hop bravado. When paired with the Biblical judgement day imagery in the chorus, the cane can be viewed as a shepherd’s staff. Aesop describes being turned away at the gates of heaven, and uses this to attack the conformity in mainstream hip-hop—gatekeepers oppress those deemed as followers (“sheep”), and therefore they “shall not pass” or become successful.

These lines may also reference Gandalf’s actions in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. During Gandalf’s clash with the Balrog, he is able to hold them off the on the bridge—he raises his cane/staff to the sky and shouts, “You shall not pass!” He then has a “fall from grace” when falling into the abyss.

Additionally, “none shall pass” alludes to a fight scene with The Black Knight in the 1975 British comedy film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The cane to the sky can also be a metaphor for Aesop still living on after his rivals have passed on. The cane an elderly person might need for walking. The cane can also be seen as Aesop’s middle finger to sky as he watches his rivals be denied entry to heaven.

Also, “Cane to the sky like none shall pass” can relate to the idea of smoking weed alone. “Cane to the sky” creates this image of a carefree person holding their “Cane” (joint or blunt) to the sky, claiming that he will not pass it to anyone.

“With a cane to the sky” is a reference to Moses parting the red sea. He lifted his rod to part the sea and let the Israelites pass, but when the Pharaoh and the Egyptians pursued behind them, Moses kept his rod held high as he swept his hand over the sea, which crashed over the army and drowned them.

In Tolkien’s book, Gandalf actually says “You cannot pass”, rather than “You shall not pass”, as in the movie. Given Aesop Rock’s penchant for accurate literary references, my guess is that this line is not related to “The Lord of the Rings”.

Further to Zack Viola’s comment, ¡No pasarán! (Spanish, they shall not pass) became an antifascist slogan for Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. Seems like it could be pertinent given the general narrative of resistance through this song.

Boo Radley, a character from the book To Kill a Mockingbird was a ‘spooky’ man who was frightening to all of the kids that walked by his house as well as being a recluse much like himself. Aesop compares himself to Boo Radley and believes this may be a reason he doesn’t have much mainstream success. Its important to note that Boo was also a very kind and caring person even though his mysterious personality made him feared.

A reference to the cross-hairs placed on and used to properly aim a machine gun turret. When the tripod is pulled together, the turret can easily be moved or hidden from sight as Aesop does to remain undetected in his wrong doings.
