The first verse could possibly see Dave alluding to a love interest, a relationship that went wrong.
There isn’t any secrets between Dave and his unnamed lover, they both truly know how each other feel. It’s all out in the open. Many times in relationships, people hold back how they truly feel for the betterment of their partner. They both have reached the point where they leave it all on the line, regardless of how it affects one another.
You can take this next two lines literally or figuratively.
This couple could of possibly been married, which has the bride of the groom adopt his last name. They could of had some sort of decoration with his last name on it on the front of the house. This transitions into the next line, where every time she sees it, she is reminded of him and all they went through together.
Or…..
His name on a hook on her door is just a metaphor, rather his name stays in her mind. She can’t forget about Dave, much like it seems he can’t let memories of her go.
Maybe a reference to his ex-wife “Jennifer Youngblood”, with whom he was with from 1993-1997.
