This is not to say that the I.W.W. wants workers unpaid, but that the wage system allows for the division of class based on exploitation. Thus, abolishing the wage system means that workers become able to get the real value of their labor rather than crumbs given to them by a boss.

Concerned by Franco’s fascist politics and the support he received from Italy & Germany, Orwell enlisted to fight in the war, joining POUM (Party Of Marxist Unification), a militant Trotskyist party.

The Stalinist sabotage of POUM’s efforts in the war shaped Orwell’s politics considerably, and later became the catalyst for much of his anti-authoritarian writings.

Referring to the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT) and the Federación Anarquista Ibérica (FAI), a pair of Spanish anarcho-syndicalist groups that have been pals for quite some time. During the war, the CNT-FAI’s membership peaked at 1.5 million.

Max Stirner was a contemporary of Marx and a member of the First International Workingmen’s Association. Stirner was the originator of egoist anarchism, the idea that all abstractions, such as the state, capitalism, property, morality, etc. al., were “spooks” designed to keep the ego from asserting it’s truest self, and that the only duty one has is to their ego.

While punk (and to a lesser extent proto-punk) flirted with anarchism in the ‘70s for the edge factor, anarcho-punk would emerge in the late '70s and early '80s, preaching the gospel of statelessness pretty damn seriously. Most notable were bands like Crass, The Dead Kennedys, and even Chumbawumba.

Perhaps one of the most prolific and critical voices of American foreign policy, Noam Chomsky is an anarcho-syndicalist who came to prominence in the ‘60s (he even pissed off Nixon something foul). Chomsky is something of a darling to the American left, inspiring everyone across the board from liberals to members of the I.W.W., of which he’s a member.

Not to be confused with Marxism or Leninism proper, Marxism-Leninism is the ideology most people associate with Soviet-style communism. Within this umbrella of thought exist Stalinism, Maoism, Ho Chi Minh Thought, and Guevarism.

Murray Bookchin was an influential anarchist and pioneer of various ecological movements. In the ‘90s he became dispossessed with anarchism due to the rise of middle class attitudes and anarcho-primitivism, and became a libertarian socialist. He passed away in 2006, but his effect of left-libertarian movements is felt to this day, mainly in the influence he had on PKK leader Abdüllah Occalan.

In 1936, the Popular Front (a combination of center and far-left parties) won control of Spain, shifting towards democracy and abolition of the Spanish monarchy.
