I have gotten many names. My overall title is the RZA, which is everything about me encompassed into one name. He is the Abbott, the greatest me that my heart and mind have formed into this body. Before my name was RZA, my name was Rakeem. The RZA is an acronym — R is for Rakeem; Z is for Zigzag, because I was on the right path, went the wrong way when I was doing negative shit, but then got back on the right path towards God; the A is for Allah, which is an Arabic word that they translate as God, though the Greek word for God means wisdoms within beauty. So the RZA means I went this way, I went that way, I came back. And that contains all my attributes, all my names — whether it is Prince Rakeem, the Scientist, Bobby Digital — the RZA is that entity. I will write a book about it one day.

That has multiple meanings. For one, it’s about sex – inches for the wenches – you put the seed in your woman. But it’s about music as well. Our first album came out in November 1993, and that winter it gradually gained attention. By the summer people really knew about us, and everybody was getting it. There have been a lot of winter albums from the Wu-Tang. The seeds we plant, they grow in the winter.

I’m not so much on my own dick as I used to be. I still feel great about myself, and I’m totally happy in my skin, but before I was so narcissistic, one girl told me, “Your shit stinks too. You think your shit don’t stink, but you take a shit like the rest of us, and it stinks.” So I grew out of it.

Originally Ruckus in B Minor was written by me and my buddy Adrian Younge. We wrote it at his studio in California and then I rewrote and rearranged it in Memphis. After I got all the lyrics, I felt like I couldn’t take it any further because I’d worked on the song for so long. So I called up Rick Rubin and was like, “Yo, I would love your help on this. I did what I did, I got the car to what it is, now I need that shit painted and some nice wheels on it. You choose the paint and wheels.” And he hooked it up — he made it exciting. He, as a Wu-Tang listener, showed what it meant to him and made it really unpredictable.

Originally this flow was done by Method Man in his verse on this song. He said something like “This is called Ruckus in B minor” and then he went on to rhyme it with “vagina” and some other stuff. When I was mixing it I thought, even though it was a potent verse, Meth’s voice was fighting the music. But it happened to flow well in the hook part, so I chopped his verse up. I took his idea but I thought this song could use my energy. It didn’t need my lyrical talent, it just needed the RZA presence to tie it up.

This skit was my way of tagging this song with Kung Fu style. Funkmaster Flex Freestyle (Part 1), from the first album, opens with the the phrase “Tiger Style,” sampled from the Shaw Brothers’ movie “Executioners from Shaolin.” This was my way of referencing that.
