“Rape culture” is a term originated by 1970s second-wave feminists. Essentially, it argues that the crime of rape does not exist in a vacuum, but is linked to society’s prevalent attitudes about gender, sex, power, and more. These attitudes and mores end up encouraging and tacitly (or explicitly) condoning rape

In 1990, businessman Clayton Williams ran for the office of Governor of Texas. His campaign was unsuccessful as the money he poured into advertising was not able to counteract his numerous political missteps-the most egregious, and perhaps the most telling, of which was a joke Williams made publicly during the campaign regarding the rape of a woman- “If it’s inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.” Williams lost the campaign, but the fact that a man running for office was allowed to even make such a statement (and, one could argue, the fact that a man had such a misunderstanding of what rape is that he could make and honestly believe such a statement to be valid) is frequently cited as an example of rape culture.

In a small show of fairness to this bitchy and self-centered woman, this is, to an extent, a fair point. It’s true that no one chooses the circumstances of their birth, and Ms. Menendez is not responsible for the fact that she perhaps didn’t work as hard as she should have had to to get to her place in life. However, she shoots herself in the foot before and after this statement by not just admitting, but seeming proud that she lies about her great economic privilege to make herself seem more “down to Earth.”

We strongly suggest that Ms. Menendez read this before mentioning how “tired” she is of being “judged”
