The hook is based on the patriotic song, “My Country, ‘Tis of Thee.” Its supposed to expose the penalties of ignorance in American society
The line ‘my country shitted on me’ in the hook also sounds phonetically as ‘my country, she don’t want me.’
When Nas says, “she wants to get rid of me” on the following line he confirms he sees his country as female, which makes sense of the previous.
It’s a more serious and contemplative, layered statement and speaks more than the surface level content of the lyric.
