Professional R&B singer Alicia Keys neighborhood growing up was in Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan.

Seeing as Julius is from Long Beach, “Hell’s Kitchen” is probably symbolic of their own household kitchen that was used for cooking up crack. Being involved in the drug game could seem like hell growing up.

Escaping the hood and becoming successful is definitely easier said than done. More often than not, it is too easy to get sucked into the hood lifestyle from drugs, guns, or gangs.

It seems like the only way to escape is to be Tameka Harris. Tameka is married to rapper T.I. and has acquired the nickname “Tiny” due to her height (4'11").

Aside from marrying T.I, Tiny is most known as a member of the all female R&B group, Xscape.

So, escaping the hood is no easy/tiny task, unless you are Tameka/Tiny and were literally in Xscape.

Anytime Joell’s mother would send him ahead of her, she would be “secretly” buying cocaine. She tried to keep him sheltered from it, but he still knew what she was doing. In fact, her addiction was part of the problem for their poverty.

Despite her best efforts to keep him in the dark in regards to drugs, Joell still grew up to become a drug dealer himself.

Based on how Joell had to dress (similar to a clown perhaps), his friends probably teased/clowned him. Whether it be serious or all in good fun, Joell had enough of it. Even with his rough appearance, Joell was still able to score with the ladies. He turned to his personality, sense of humor and, of course, rhyming.
