The “seven tiers” refer to the heaven’s seven layers of the sky. The concept can be found in the Abrahamic religions such as Islam, Judaism and Christianity.

As Lupe practices Islam, it would make sense that he would be familiar with this idea. In Islam, each Heaven or “ss-samawat” consists of seven levels, the first and lowest level is Dunyah, which covers the known universe and all within it.

Mansions are desirable places to live, and a person defined as a champion would have succeeded in life. Thus, in direct reference to these lines, those who win the right to enter heaven —champions— get to live life in a beautiful new home —mansions— in one of the afterlife’s seven layers.

Furthering on the specificity of the use of the word “mansions” when talking about faith, Lupe could be borrowing ideas from John 14:2 where Jesus said:

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

The Vedas are the most ancient Hindu scriptures, containing hymns, philosophy, and guidance on ritual. The Punjabis are an ethnic group associated with the Punjab region of India. Although Punjabi people commonly follow Sikhism, nearly 80% of India is Hindu, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to see someone from this area reading the Vedas.

Sepulveda Blvd is a major street in Los Angeles that runs from the San Fernando Valley in the North all the way down to Long Beach.

Additionally, connecting with the theme of slavery seen throughout the album, Juan Sepulveda was a known proponent of colonial slavery who used religion to create a naturalistic justification for slavery.

As stated on the Chicago State University website:

“Baba Kwesi,” as his students knew him, was a mentor, educator, activist, and long-time director of the African-American Male Resource Center at Chicago State University … Although he has transitioned, his presence is even more so felt as his spirit continues to live on in the minds and hearts of all who knew him.

Moreover, formerly The Lupe Fiasco Foundation, We Are M.U.R.A.L. (Magnifying Urban Realities and Affecting Lives) provides nurturing meals and winter clothing to inner-city youth, while fostering artistic and academic excellence in their respective neighborhoods. The foundation soon became the catalyst for The Neighborhood Start-up Fund, which encourages disenfranchised youth in developing entrepreneurial skills to establish businesses in undeserved communities.

The Slave Ship, originally titled Slavers Throwing overboard the Dead and Dying—Typhoon coming on, is a painting by the British artist J.M.W. Turner. Placed next to the painting was the untitled poem spoken within this song.

These words set the tone for the rest of the album, as Lupe has stated in an interview that the entire album revolves around the concept of slavery:

It’s about a group of slaves on a slave ship on their way to Africa to the West Indies and they are thrown off the boat. But they didn’t die. They stayed alive and they lived under the sea. And they dedicated their lives to sinking slave ships – so they became this super, underwater force against slavery. It’s like a super-deep story that I am building on different fronts. But that’s the main idea and the source material for the album.

Pictured below is J.M.W. Turner’s The Slave Ship.

SEGA is a popular American video game company. Two systems created by the company are the Sega Genesis and Sega Master System.

The word “Genesis” is defined as the origin or coming into being of something. In Lupe’s case, he believes he’s been a genius since a specific, undefined genesis in his life. Thus, he has gone on to master the system in which he operates.

These lines can also be seen as reference to religion, as the world’s genesis is something of a large debate. In the following line, Lupe makes reference to Hinduism and the Vedas. The Rig Veda, which is said to date back to more than five millennia, speaks on the universe’s genesis:

Who really knows, and who can swear,
How creation arose, when or where!
Even gods came after creation’s day,
Who really knows, who can truly say
When and how did creation start?
Did He do it? Or did He not?
Only He up there knows, maybe;
Or perhaps, not even He.

Even furthermore, since this entire album is about slavery, this “master system” could be a reference to the system of trading slaves, which literally benefited the master.

To be self-aware is to have conscious knowledge of your own being and feelings. Thus, if an opera was to be self-aware, it would have to literally compose itself in a musical sense. Moreover, conjuration is the creation of something magic, and creating a self-aware opera would definitely meet this criteria.

In the classic video game Sonic the Hedgehog, a “zone” refers to a playable level. Lupe leaves out “Hedgehog” at the end of the line so as to match the previous end rhyme of “opera.”

To put it as simply as possible, much like a self-aware opera, the music Lupe puts out is so magical that it would take a conjurer to create anyone who can be on the same level as him —note that compose, conjure, and produce are all synonyms for create. Moreover, all who aspire to be like Lupe must stay composed and in the zone.

Opera is the key word here, as it is a kind of “work” that attempts to impress the audience with sounds more than it attempts to express meaning. It values feeling over thinking, which seems to be the basis of this track, as it becomes harder to understand him as the song goes on. I sense that Lupe’s playing in mumble mode.

Within its simplest layer, these lines can be seen as a message about persevering and “floating” when life’s problems try to “drown” you.

However, the overall theme of this album revolves around slavery, and as originally discovered in a Reddit post, these lines are likely referencing the sinking of slave ships by LongChains. On an official Reddit post that discussed Drogas Wave, Lupe explained exactly who the aforementioned LongChains were:

They are called The LongChains. When they were submerged in the water their earthly lives expired and they began a new life under and on the water. Some walked back to Africa while others stayed in the sea to help fight slavery by attacking and sinking slaveships. (Micheal Young History was resurrected by the same method when his grave was filled with the liquor his friends & The Streets poured out to mourn him.) The LongChains disbanded after the end of the transatlantic slave trade however a few were chosen to stay behind to keep watch and as guides for decedents of slaves that found freedom and wanted to return home. The last of The LongChains still patrol the seas (and heavens!) to this day.

Lupe Fiasco raps about his nephews, and how their adulthood may go when they turn into men.

Prior to the album’s release, Lupe performed the first two verses of King Nas via freestyle during the second half of a Grammy weekend jam session edition of Sway In The Morning, which featured the Robert Glasper Experiment, Rapsody, Chris Rivers and other artists.

Many thought that this track had something to do with Nas' status as the king, but Lupe took to Reddit to comment on a common misconception that could be easily found within the title of this song:

“KING NAS” is not about Nas being a king or anything like that it’s not about the rapper Nas at all. It’s a song I wrote dedicated to and inspired by my two nephews named King & Nas as they journey into manhood. I always dedicate songs to my family.

Lupe posted a photo of King and Nas shortly after the album was released.

Here’s a posted photo of Nas and Lupe at a show in 2017.

Transfiguration is a complete change of form or appearance into a more beautiful or spiritual state.

As the chorus of this song talks about both Greek mythology and the osprey, this line is likely inspired by the story of King Nisus. Nisus was betrayed by his own daughter, who had fallen in love with an opposing king, and decided to act upon her love, carrying out a chain of events that transfigured Nisus into an osprey. His daughter was drowned and then transfigured into a small sea bird, and for thereafter, Nisus, as the osprey would forever chase after the sea bird.

More in line with the slavery centered theme of the album, this transfiguration could directly be referring to one from the state of a captured slave to being free and living immortally among the LongChains.
