Lupe is comparing the oddness of life to that of getting an Egg McMuffin at night. In America, at the time this song was released, McDonalds stopped selling breakfast at about 11 AM. Thus, getting a breakfast item such as an Egg McMuffin at night would be very odd.

Here, Lupe takes a stab at the controversy that surrounds gay marriage. The band being pushed upon Sam’s finger is a wedding ring. Sam and Sam, both potentially male, may symbolize a homosexual partnership.

Most people are usually either completely for gay marriage or completely against it; however, both sides strongly believe their views are right. If you’re against it, many may accuse you of being a bigot. If you’re for it, many may accuse you of being wicked, as homosexual acts go against Christianity and Islam. Either way, you’re going to be seen as wrong by someone.

This same situation applies for many other aspects, and disagreements, in life. There are usually always going to be two different parties with different sets of values. Consequently, it is highly likely that you will always be criticized for what you do.

Basically this line shows that morals aren’t really universal as many believe they are, but rather shift over time and across populations.

Keeping with the video game theme, Soul makes a reference to the popular 1980’s game Dig Dug. In this game, to get to the next level, you must literally dig with a shovel.

In referencing the shovel, Soulo refers to it as a platinum shovel. Obtaining a platinum record in the music industry is defined as selling 1 million copies of an artist’s album or song. Here, Soulo suggests that he and Lupe are ‘proceeding to the next level’ by not simply making songs to go platinum but are instead making music with meaning and substance.

Most religions believe that once you die, you can float into the heavens, or burn in an eternal fire.

Even though you may be gone, memories remain with those left behind. The thought of being forgotten scares most — they just want to be remembered. However, if being remembered means placing flowers on a tombstone each year they’re uninterested. The heart and mind are stronger than an annual chore.

In sumo wrestling, being labeled a Yokozuna is the highest achievable rank and honor. As part of a ritual originating from Shinto religion, before a sumo match the fighters throw salt and stamp their feet to purify and rid the ring of evil spirits.

Like a sumo, the competition for a finite amount of space—represented by the sumo circle— requires competition and fierceness to succeed.

Redaction is most commonly used to describe top-secret government documents that have been released to the public but with certain details blacked out or edited. The first part of this line plays off the one preceding it about MKUltra.

In the second part, Lupe gives a little shout out to Ab-Soul, who is featured on this track. Soul was inflicted with Steven Johnson Syndrome as a child and his eyes never recovered. As a result, he is forced to wear dark sunglasses nearly all day every day.

Caught Stevens–Johnson syndrome when I was ten years old
Internal and external fever, 80%
Fatality rate at that time, ain’t that some shit
Severe pink eye, my eyes swollen shut
For like two or three months, it’s still bright as fuck

- Ab-Soul

Pictured below is a before and after of Soul with the disease.

At 7 feet 2 inches tall, former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo truly is high in the sky. However, although he was once known for his skills on the court, he is now known for his widespread humanitarian work. In some people’s eyes, he is an angel, but it can also be infered that he has an angel sitting on his own shoulder.

Moreover, when Lupe uses the word high, he is actually making another reference to drugs. He even follows this line up with a reference to the effects of LSD.

Keeping with the outer-worldly theme of this song, Ab-Soul uses a play on words with his name and says he’s a soldier of the solar system. Moreover, by calling it the Ab-Solar system, he is basically saying he controls it. This use of the prefix “Sol” in his lyrics is reminiscent of what he did in the last verse of “Tree of Life”.

It’s well known that Ab-Soul is an avid marijuana smoker. However, he sees himself as more than simply just a stoner. Much of Soul’s rap, such as “Terrorist Threats” and “Beautiful Death,” focus on more worldly matters than your average stoner-rapper’s music does.

In his mind, he’s a bold artist, and he credits much of this to weed. Note that he also uses a play on words with “stoner” and “bolder”/“boulder”. A boulder is a large stone or rock. This is to say what Lupe said about him was an understatement. In comparison to other “stoners,” Ab-Soul does it much more, he is literally bold-er.
