Despite seeing her smile every day, and the prospect of seeing her smile for the rest of his life, he still looks forward to this moment.

Here we get the image of the narrator calling his partner throughout the day, just to hear her comforting voice. This gives him the strength to carry on through the rest of his day until he gets to hurry home and see her.

We often get stuck in our ways and fail to notice how good things really are, for the simple fact that they may not be progressing at a noticeable pace. Gary is pointing out that these are the things we should pay attention to the most.

Again, there’s nothing particularly special about this act, but we see the difference clearly when we consider the desperation from the previous song.

Also, this is just one of those small things that make a relationship so significant.

An interesting transition on the album, from “prayin' for daylight” to waking up with the sun shining on your face.

He is also stressing the day-to-day events that we often take for granted, like the fact we are even waking up, the feeling of seeing sunshine, and the smell of coffee in the morning.

Similar the first track of this album, the band starts out repeating the hook of this track in unison, with what sounds like some sort of auto tune effect.

The idea here is that no matter how rudimentary a relationship may seem, it can still be pretty special and important in one’s life.

Rounding out the end of this song, the band joins in harmony to stress the most important factor here: sleeping alone just isn’t as fun.

At this point, the narrator is just tugging at the heart strings. Forget about what he did or said before, the important thing is that they both care for each other.

This is also an attempt at the old cliche image of two lovers in different places, staring up at the same night sky. Phil Collins used it to the same effect during his solo career:

from wherever I am, wherever you are
we’ll find somewhere.
I see the same stars in the same sky
shining down on you,
I’ll be looking up from wherever I am
and it’s you I’ll see if you’re looking too.

Now that he finally realizes the importance of his ex-girl, albeit only when it’s dark out, he hopes that his pleading did not come too late.

Also, this is a metaphor in-line with the whole “prayin' for daylight” theme, where this momentary period of loneliness is just the darkness before she comes back into his life.

The playful video and uptempo melody cause a bit of distortion with respect to the subject matter of this song, and probably hint at this being sort of tongue-in-cheek or an “I told you so” for those who have ever mistreated a woman that was too good for them to begin with.
