Here we explicitly see the underlying motivation for asking for her back. He implies that she left due to a lack of attention, or else he was not treating her like he should have, but didn’t believe she would actually take off.

Moreover, now that she has transitioned so quickly into her new life without him, his is doubly panicked and wants her back even more.

Another common theme in break-up songs is the pleading for forgiveness. Although we don’t know what exactly the narrator did wrong, he promises to make amends for his mistake if she’ll just come back to him.

Interesting to note is the focus on spending another night alone. We can assume that the narrator is not so inclined to ask for her back when he is busy throughout the day, which makes this pseudo-apology even weaker.

The nights remain the hardest time for the narrator, as it is the moment when all his thoughts come to the forefront of his mind. Also, he’s not able to keep himself busy, i.e. to pretend nothing is different since the break-up. Obviously his empty bed would serve as a cold reminder that his relationship is over.

This sentiment is not much different than that we see in other famous break-up songs.

Just Kidding..

Since Rascal Flatts is a pretty down-home country band, we’ll assume he’s just talking about watching tv through the night..

The verse begins very uptempo with Gary leading on the vocals. Even the imagery is benign, as he describes a fairly basic scene where he is just getting ready to go to bed.

However, notice how he has the lights turned up and the tv on. He’s clearly not getting to sleep any time soon, despite the time.

This a capella intro is likely meant to give a little sneak peak of the group’s harmonizing abilities, which are pretty impressive at times.

This is the lead-off single to their album Rascal Flatts. It tells the story of a break-up, and the subsequent loss of sleep that often follows. It was written by Steve Bogard and Rick Giles, and peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks.

Band member Jay DeMarcus said about the track:

That was the first tune we ever cut as a group, and the first song that Lyric Street ever heard us do. It was very, very instrumental in getting our deal. I think if somebody said tell us what you’re all about, we could play that song and they’d get a pretty good picture of what we can do.
