While the evidence that at-risk individuals need to increase their physical activity is compelling, some of you young-guns might be left thinking it’s not such a big deal for you…wrong.

After reviewing 86 unique studies, Canadian researchers Ian Janssen and Allana LeBlanc made it clear that no matter how young you are, physical activity is incredibly important.

Not only is 2 or 3 hours of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week associated with a lower incidence of obesity, but also high cholesterol, low HDL, depression and a number of other health outcomes.

If you’re interested in reading more, you can find the full version of this review here.

In one of the most comprehensive reviews over the benefits of physical activity, particularly for those suffering from CVD, diabetes, osteoporosis, or cancer, Dr. Warburton and his team conclude:

There is incontrovertible evidence that regular physical activity contributes to the primary and secondary prevention of several chronic diseases and is associated with a reduced risk of premature death.

Some of the most interesting points:

  • Being fit or active was associated with a greater than 50% reduction in risk [of death from all causes].
  • In one study, people who went from unfit to fit over a 5-year period had a reduction of 44% in the relative risk of death compared with people who remained unfit.
  • An energy expenditure of about 1600 kcal (6720 kJ) per week has been found to be effective in halting the progression of coronary artery disease, and an energy expenditure of about 2200 kcal (9240 kJ) per week has been shown to be associated with plaque reduction in patients with heart disease.
  • Modest weight loss through diet and exercise reduced the incidence of diabetes among high-risk people by about 40%–60% over 3–4 years
  • Routine physical activity, whether as part of a job or as a leisure activity, is associated with reductions in the incidence of specific cancers, in particular colon and breast cancer.
  • Weight-bearing exercise, especially resistance exercise, appears to have the greatest effects on bone mineral density.
  • Improvements in indicators of health status can occur as a result of increasing physical activity levels in the absence of changes in aerobic fitness.

Basically, if you suffer from, or are at risk for, any chronic diseases, you need to be up and moving! This study can be found in full (for free), here.

Although it has absolutely nothing to do with whether it is viable, efficient, or the right thing to do…No, you shouldn’t be surprised. That would imply the establishment of some new, unexpected precedents. Historically speaking, the relationship between imperialist intervention and signals intelligence, i.e. communication interception, is not new. The earliest known encryption system was developed by Julius Caesar himself, the executioner of the Roman Republic.

Furthermore, including both citizens and foreigners when considering “our adversaries” (domestic communications make up a significant chunk of intercepted signals) is nothing new either. It’s been only 40 years since the last time the NSA was caught intercepting domestic communications. 40 years ago, the Church Committee and the rest of the Senate had enough common sense and courage to regain some sense of control over things. It remains to be seen if the same can be said today.

We have seen segments of our Government, in their attitudes and action, adopt tactics unworthy of a democracy, and occasionally reminiscent of totalitarian regimes. We have seen a consistent pattern in which programs initiated with limited goals, such as preventing criminal violence or identifying foreign spies, were expanded to what witnesses characterized as “vacuum cleaners”, sweeping in information about lawful activities of American citizens. The tendency of intelligence activities to expand beyond their initial scope is a theme which runs through every aspect of our investigative findings.

-Fmr Senator Frank Church

While “terrorists, cybercriminals, human traffickers and others” certainly fit into the category of “use code to hide their activities,” so do businesses, individuals, and legitimate holders of privacy. What the NSA fails to realize, or choses to ignore, is that corrupting encryption for the “adversaries” also ruins it for everyone else. If the system is broken in one place, everyone must suffer this same fault, a basic tenet of cybersecurity. The ends justified by such means do not seem readily apparent, and are not elaborated upon by the NSA.

Side note:

  • The U.S. launched 231 cyber attacks in 2011, and currently has 85,000 strategic implants in major networks around the world, giving them surreptitious control of significant worldwide communications.
  • Despite this offensive, global terrorism, by most measures, appears to have grown since 2001.
  • Likewise, the global human trafficking industry is flourishing, representing an estimated $32 billion a year trade-value.

Considering these developments, it’s hard to imagine that the primary goal of these programs is really to target terrorists, human traffickers, or other international criminals. If it is, then it is failing miserably, and might be worth some reconsideration anyway.

The young victim was vaginally penetrated by the perpetrators' fingers. Why is this particularly important? Who knows, but one can assume Cohen brought it up for a reason, and that reason seems to be in order to downplay the situation.

The fact is, it was rape according to Ohio law, plain and simple:

…vaginal intercourse between a male and female; anal intercourse, fellatio, and cunnilingus between persons regardless of sex; and, without privilege to do so, the insertion, however slight, of any part of the body or any instrument, apparatus, or other object into the vaginal or anal opening of another. Penetration, however slight, is sufficient to complete vaginal or anal intercourse.

Cohen’s sick game of separating rape cases from least rape-y to most rape-y tells you a lot about his inherent values.
